Documents released Monday and seen in advance by The Associated Press lend weight to the belief that suppression within the highest levels of the U.S. government helped cover up Soviet guilt in the killing of some 22,000 Polish officers and other prisoners in the Katyn forest and other locations in 1940.

Of course he was and of course he did.

If you think of WWII as "The War to Save Russian Communism," it makes more sense.

Joe McCarthy, in addition to being a sloppy drunk, was an optimist.

Was FDR an SOB?  Probably.  Does this make him an SOB?  I don't really think so.  No more so than Truman for dropping the bomb, for the Navy and the Indianapolis sinking, etc.  I think the real SOB's were the people who maintained through the whole Cold War that we didn't have enough evidence.

Dude, I did my history thesis on this very subject. The Western allies involvement in the coverup of Katyn and other massacres continued through WWII and into the post war era.

Yep, I knew this years ago.  Not  "new" news, maybe just because some old papers were declassified the truth "finally" came out.   Just like when the Venona files came out and confirmed the guilt of the Rosenbergs, Alger Hiss, et al.

I used to service the boilers at a Roman Catholic convalescent home. Pretty much all Polish Nuns and staff.

The head of the maintenance and grounds was an old Polish guy named Frank, he fought in WWII against the Germans. After the war him and his wife escaped the Russians and ended up in the USA.

His hatred for FDR was only eclipsed by his hatred of Eleonore Roosevelt.

He would never forgive FDR for selling out Poland and turning them over to the godless communists.
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Thanks, brimic.  Let's not forget that the Russians met the Germans in the middle of Poland on that September day in 1939.

There are plenty of others but this is a good start.

Like the Lincoln scholarship, there is a cottage industry of revisionism on RedDR that has emerged in the last generation.

Just to show you how close the Russians were to RedDR, here is an excerpt from an essay I wrote.

Harry Hopkins*

*Harry Hopkins was one of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s closest advisers. He was one of the architects of the New Deal, especially the relief programs of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which he directed and built into the largest employer in the country. In World War II he was Roosevelt’s chief diplomatic advisor and troubleshooter and was a key policy maker in the $50 billion Lend Lease program that sent aid to the allies.

His Soviet code name was Zamestitel.

He wanted a 100% income tax:

FDR and his New Dealers wanted to finance the war equitably, with stiff tax rates on high incomes. How stiff? FDR proposed a 100 percent top tax rate. At a time of “grave national danger,” Roosevelt told Congress in April 1942, “no American citizen ought to have a net income, after he has paid his taxes, of more than $25,000 a year.” That would be about $350,000 in today’s dollars.

The year before, steel exec Eugene Grace had grabbed $522,537, over $8 million today, in 1941 salary.

But conservative lawmakers would quickly reject FDR’s plan. Four months later, Roosevelt tried again. He repeated his $25,000 “supertax” income cap call in his Labor Day message.

Congress shrugged that request off, too. FDR still didn’t back down. In early October, he issued an executive order that limited top corporate salaries to $25,000 after taxes. The move would “provide for greater equality in contributing to the war effort,” Roosevelt declared.

See: http://flaglerlive.com/26685/gc-fdr-and-taxes/

The marginal tax rate peaked at 94% in 1943 thanks to the machinations of Milton Friedman in the Roosevelt administration who also pioneered income tax withholding.

Roo_ster: It is rare when I meet someone with a lower opinion of fdr than i.  Tell me, good man, what you think of woodrow wilson?

I think Wilson took Lincoln's federal leviathan and brought it to the next level with his entry into WWI which we should have sat out.  If we had, the Central Powers may have won or promulgated a stalemate so the Treaty of Versailles and would never have created the conditions for the second WW to follow thanks to the heavy-handed behavior of the victors.  Possibly even strangling the Russian Revolution in its cradle.  All counter-factual speculation, of course.

Here is a taste of who Wilson really was:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Protective_League

John Maynard Keynes (a fellow villain) on Wilson:  "His thought and his temperament were essentially theological not intellectual, with all the strength and the weakness of that manner of thought, feeling, and expression."

He was a socialist Progressive who saw the government as the ultimate instrument of good.  It is instructive that the core of his thinking was Hegelian which had a tremendous influence on Marxian thought.

Marvin Pipher did a magisterial job of summing up what he thought in an Amazon review of Pestritto's book on Wilson:

"With this in mind, Wilson's primary aim became one of distancing the nation from the constitutionalism of 1787; a task to which he devoted much of his life. In his writings, for example, he opposed the separation of powers (executive, legislative, and judiciary) on the grounds that it was an inefficient form of government. The United States Constitution, he claimed, should not be construed as having a fixed meaning, but, rather, must be interpreted to mean whatever the times required it to mean. He felt that if the times demanded something, the Constitution had to be interpreted to allow for it. The judiciary, therefore, had to be politicized in order for it to become an instrument of progress. To achieve this end: he argued for an "activist judiciary" partnered with a charismatic and forceful president, and a professional bureaucracy sheltered from politics, the cares of this world, and the influence of the public; the bureaucracy to perform many of the legislative functions of Congress. He called for Congress to abandon its Constitutionally mandated function of legislating, leaving that responsibility to the "experts" in the bureaucracy, and to concentrate instead on broad oversight, emphasizing that Congress must actually cease considering itself as part of "the government."

Wilson was well aware that his "modern" government ran counter to the Constitution. As a result, he also saw the need for an external organization voluntarily formed and independent of the law (the Constitution) the object of which would be to bind the actions of the three branches of government more closely together. He saw this as being the function of the two political parties. Finally, he urged that rather than studying the American Constitution's forms or ideas, one should instead study the history of the development of the American "State."

Wilson shared the Progressive conviction that the national government should be used as an active instrument of social progress through the exercise of its regulatory powers. He also contended that socialism is much closer to his idea of true democracy than is any notion of government that attempts to limit the power of the state by protecting the sphere of individual rights."

I could not have said it better.
