My long experience with cats is they like disarray in their households. The more stuff that's lying about, the more fun they have batting it around until it ends up on the floor.
Proof? Just watch a cat trying to clobber a moth flying around a lamp. Floor, meet lamp. Stuff on the desk, meet floor.
One partial cure I had for cat-chaos was to leave four or five ping-pong balls around, and one or two in the bathtub.
