A Northumberland fitness instructor has defended plans to teach children as young as 12 how to pole dance.

Laraine Riddell will start classes in the New Year at a gym in Choppington, in which boys and girls will be taught to spin up and down on a pole.

Ms Riddell insists the classes are nothing but good exercise for children who are at risk of obesity.

But the children's charity Kidscape, said pole dancing was traditionally linked to erotic acts in clubs.

Ms Liddell said she wanted to distance her classes from images of naked women dancing for money in nightclubs.

'Fantastic feeling'

She said she had the support of parents who welcomed the classes.

Ms Riddell said: "This is a good way of tackling obesity. It is dancing and it is fun and gives you a fantastic feeling.

"I have seen the joy in the faces of children who are holding their body strength up, doing the splits, spinning round and upside down.

"The children don't come in with thoughts of strip clubs in their minds."

But Michele Elliott, director of Kidscape, said the classes were "out of order".

She said: "Pole dancing is traditionally an activity where women on stage are given money which is stuck in their underwear.

"To teach 12-year-old girls pole dancing is out of order. I am sure pole dancing is good exercise - but so is stripping. After all, strippers have great bodies.

"By all means give the kids exercise, but just skip the poles."

It actually sounds like fun (the climbing on poles part, not the stripping part.)  I loved climbing on things.  Telephone pole, trees, basket ball posts, soccer goals, you name it.  My high school had a 60' rappelling tower for the JROTC folks to use.  I climbed up the face of that tower one day instead of using the ladder.  Boy where they pissed about that...

Whatever happened to those big fat hemp ropes with the giant knots that you had to climb up and down as part of gym class?

My thoughts, exactly.

Whatever happened to those big fat hemp ropes with the giant knots that you had to climb up and down as part of gym class?
Theory 1:  As with other things - enough kids fell off and busted their asses, parents complained or sued, and that was that.
Theory 2:  Too many kids got caught trying to smoke it.

We had one at my elementary school, but without the knots.  I was happy as heck the first time I managed to climb to the top (after failing to do so many times).

They are just training young women to enter the work force after school.   sad

Soccer is actually good exercise if you separate the skill levels and force the slow kids to actually play.  I took a beginner soccer class in college with a coach who did this.  Not being able to hardly even run or kick the ball at the beginning, I was playing with the better players by the end of the semester.  It can be a lot of fun if some hot shot is not running right by you every time.

Soccer, blech.  Too much running.  You spend the entire game sprinting this way and that.  If I want to run I do it without bothering with the whole team/sports/rules/cooperation thing.

If they want to help these kids - get them outside and walking, running, climbing etc. There are plenty of places to do this in the more rural areas, plenty outside the smaller cities, and with a school trip once a week or so they can instill a healthy interest in such activities to supplement regular phys ed even in the larger cities. Cultivate an outdoor culture as opposed to the indoor popular "entertainment" variety.

Introducing them to perverted acrobatics on a pole is much along the same lines as much of the "cheerleading" in this country.

I guess the proud parents can start putting a sticker with the pole dancer silhouette and their kid's name under them on the back window of the family SUV.
