Question about PC FPS
« on: July 10, 2008, 07:49:55 PM »
Just out of curiosity, are there any games for the PC that allow the player to drive a Bradley or a M113?

The Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942 allows you to drive a bradley (it's actually pretty kick-ass, so long as you don't run into a tank).

Battlefield 2 might, but I've never played it.   My brother who has it thinks it does.

Some of the maps on the Desert Combat mod has the AA version of the M113, but I think that's the only place it makes an appearence.

Those are the only ones that I am aware of.

It looks like Battlefield 2 might be my best bet, but since it's three years old I have to wonder if there are still a lot of people playing it.

This is a little old school, but Operation Flashpoint will let you do all those things.  The driving in the vehicle models is relatively accurate, at least for the ones I have driven in real life.  The M113 is a gutless wonder for example in both the game and real life.

I see that  Armed Assault probably has what I'm looking for.  No Bradley, but they do have the Stryker.

I know that the M113 is great RPG bait, but shooting at old ones with a M2HB down at Benning sort of captured my interest in them.

Armed assault is nice, brings my PC to its knees though and game play is rough so I don't play it.  It is made by the same folks who do OFP.

Yes, the system requirements are just about where my PC is right now.  I do have a 256k video card, though.

BF2 has the LAV-25. According to wiki, it has the same main armaments as the BFV. The LAV is decent with taking out a tank with its anti-tank missiles. But you have to have the drop on the target, and a supporting infantry with a anti-tank rocket launcher for a quick follow up shot is best.

BF2 is your best bet, but be prepared for the world of hurt when you realize how little EA cared about that game. I wouldn't be surprised if the memory leaks, security flaws, and lag issues aren't resolved yet. I haven't even started talking about the abuse of the punishment system, or the griefers.

I'm such a geek..  the LAV only has the 25MM and a coax MG.  No TOW missiles like the Bradley does.  Now...  It could have a man portable Javelin on top like we used to do on the M113's with a guy standing up in the hatch but that is an initiative thing by the users, not something built in.

In the late '80s/early '90's, there was Steel Thunder (The first one I had ran on a Commodore 64, there was also a PC version).  You had a choice of M48, M60, M1 or M2/3 with which to fight. Simple, yet cool game.

Steel Beasts Professional PE by eSim...

It's as close as you can get to being in a Bradley without actually being in one or using a US Army simulator.

SB Pro is used by Armies the world over to simulate combined arms warfare with an emphasis on armored units especially tanks. The M1, multiple versions of the Leopard, some swedish tanks, pc's of various kinds, all are manable. A very wide variety of Soviet equipment is modeled but not mannable. Infantry is modeled but the model is just barely adequate.

Operation Flashpoint is a mere shadow of reality in comparison to SB.

Plus SB has a very active online community.

If you want realism go SB. If you want an FPS with tanks go OFP.

But does it have my old M728 Combat Engineering Vehicle?  I miss my old 165mm demo gun

No... it does however sport a VTR. Not mannable but still pretty cool.
