If I go family plan or Tracphone, there's gonna have to be some testing to find a phone that gets loud enough (for voice -- he can hear all the ringers fine).
Nearly everything has speakerphone these days; using it while holding the phone to your ear is quite loud. (Though in a noisy environment, it leaves the mic picking up everything around.) My wife was able to do that within minutes after firing a full-power .357 indoors without hearing protection.
