12ga value packs at Wally World - how many?
« on: March 03, 2009, 04:39:41 PM »
I'm having a brain fart.  What is the cartridge count in the Federal 12ga value packs at Wally World?  IIRC they aren't a 250rd case, but something like 100 rounds.

Make sure you check the price of the value pack vs individual white boxes of winchester loads. I have noticed that the value packs can be $1-3 higher than if you bought 4 boxes of cheap winchester shot shells.

But those don't make as much of a spectacular mess when they spill.

Are the federal bulk packs the ones famous for being slightly out of spec and jamming some guns or is that the winchester bulk packs?

Winchester, I do believe...the cheapest Winchester.

IIRC Federals burn with that slightly spicy scent, somewhat like burning oak leaves.

Yeah...I don't buy Winchester shotgun ammunition anymore because of it.

I can get Remington or Federal ammo for as cheap or almost as cheap and without the out-of-spec issues.

The only thing I wish is that Federal would put out 100 rd value packs of buck for $20...

The 20 ga valuepaks, though slightly smaller, also have four 25 round boxes for a total of 100.

Really?  You mean the bulk packs that are actually 4 separate boxes inside a larger one?

Never had a problem with Winchester, shot them in a double, pump and semi auto.

I have had problems with Federal jamming in pump shotguns. I still will not buy any federal ammo because of experiences I have had with their steel loads in a Mossberg 835 I used to waterfowl hunt with.

Never had a jam with the bulk packs, but I have seen others shooting them have sticky extraction with them.

The shot quality is definitely not as good. There's gaps in the pattern. When shooting trap, using bulk-pack ammo pretty consistently meant two-three "dusted" but not broken clays per round for me.

It's okay general purpose blasting ammo, but I only shoot Winchester AA's when it counts.
I promise not to duck.

The point of my question was how spilling one of those (one box with 4 boxes inside) makes a big mess compared to spilling 4 individual boxes.

I've had pretty good luck shooting the el cheapo Winchester shells, but the non-brass bases on them corrode pretty quickly if you leave them in your bag around any amount of moisture.

Well if you want to run the experiment go ahead. Please post aar w/ pics. =D

I haven't had any problems with the Federal bulk packs in my 12ga 870.

I've never used the Federal bulk shotgun ammunition, but I've used Remington, and it works well.  The hull is pretty close to the same as what they use in their more expensive trap ammunition, the only difference is that it has a steel base instead of a brass one.  Seems to break clays just fine, too (at least, when I'm holding up my end of the deal).

It's usually priced similar to Winchester, maybe a buck or two more per 100 pack.

With the cheap Winchester stuff, I was having problems with it fitting in a 20 ga. Stevens 311.  The hulls were slightly too large, and had problems with extraction.  They weren't that easy to load, either.  I can't imagine the issues they would have caused if I had attempted to feed them through the Browning Auto-5.
