Lehigh Defense Ammo?
« on: October 27, 2022, 11:10:27 AM »
Do any of you have experience with Lehigh Defense ammo? I guess I haven't paid attention, but it's been around for awhile. For whatever reason, the youtubz has recently directed me to a bunch of videos not on Lehigh specifically, but to a bunch of BTDT guy videos who mention that Lehigh is their pistol defense ammo choice. I guess it is also known as Underwood ammo? That part is confusing.

I'm just curious if anyone here has used / uses it. I have for years mostly just carried Federal Hyrashock and more recently the Sig Elite ammo in my carry pistols.

I tend to regard trick bullets with a bit of skepticism - I'm not entirely convinced that the assertions about hydraulic shock, hydrostatic shock, fluid transfer or whatever are actually a factor at pistol velocity. I personally think that whatever premium JHP ammo from a reliable manufacturer that works well in YOUR gun will work as well as anything for a given caliber.

If there are any experienced coroners, trauma surgeons, or forensic pathologists here with experience treating or examining gunshot wounds, I have a simple question: If you don't have a bullet or bullet fragments to examine, can you actually tell what brand of ammo was used from examining the wound?

Serious question - I don't know the answer.

Also not a fan of gimmick ammo. Though I do regret not stocking up on the Hornady Zombie Max stuff when it was common just to have the packaging.

I'm not sure that it's gimmicky ammo. Bill Wilson recently bought the company.

I wouldn't call it gimmick, just different.  It has been on the market for a few years so it isn't exactly new.  Lots of youtube videos out there testing it within the last five years.

Most testing I have seen says it is decent.  Maybe not quite as good as the best HP ammo.  I like it in 380 and 32 where a lot of HP ammo has a reputation for low penetration.  I have a few other calibers that I have played with, but I haven't tried to hunt anything with it.  It is generally too expensive for me to want to go with it for full time defense ammo.

Paul Harrell tests it in 380 compared to other HP ammo.  It compared decently in his meat target.

He does some testing with penetration through a car door.

Iraqveteran8888 tests the 45 acp.  He has tested a number of different ammo types made by Lehigh.

Kentucky Ballistics has done some testing and comparisons also.

One of the things that led me to it was not their "two-legged varmint" defensive ammo, but their penetrator 10mm, potentially for the new fishing pistol. That ammo is sold out everywhere, so whether it's the bees knees or just what the cool kids get, everyone seems to be buying it in 10mm for their bear defense or whatever pistols.

Underwood's web site shows the extreme penetrator in stock.  This is where I normally get it from though I have seen it at gun shops more in the last couple years.

Thanks. Dang stuff is expensive, but I might try some. It's always the initial testing that's expensive. Once you decide to use it, it's not so bad buying enough for a couple of mags and shooting it off every year or two to refresh.

I've read claims that while Underwood and Lehigh use the same bullets, Underwood ammo is loaded a little bit hotter.  Haven't had opportunity to verify that.

I use Underwood Ammo exclusively in my 10MM and .357 Sig firearms.  Good stuff and accurate.  Midway USA is carrying it as well but I order directly from Underwood.  They ship fast as well.
