Let's put it this way.

Soon after the Browns were peacefully apprehended, US Marshals came into a local tavern in Manchester where the Free State sorts like to meet. This made it onto the local news. They asked people if they were members of the project. They asked them questions. And some, who were, were absolutely shocked that the Marshals already had files on them and knew exactly who they were. Even just "loudly vocal" sorts who posted on the web supporting the Browns and offered to bring them supplies. They knew names, addresses, family, everything. Because that's what they are paid to do, assess to see whether someone is a threat or not. And they are very good at it.

If you lie down with dogs, you get fleas.

These people, the ones I've seen, seem to think it's all a big game. They don't realize when they're playing with fire.

Yeah but taxes=communism.  :O

Where'd you hear that? Kings have taxed, republics have taxed, America taxes, democracies have taxed... You can't tell me every example of those were communist systems!

You do know that the government will probably take out your taxes directly from your Navy paycheck, right? How are you going to get around that?

MB, if you consider yourself a smart person, you'll understand where that line is between being a vocal opponent, and making yourself an easy target.

Likewise, if Freakazoid enters the military as a prospective nuke sub tech, and they do his background investigation, I sure's heck wouldn't want what he posted on an RKBA forum, in jest or otherwise, to be a factor, know what I mean?

And yes, they do look into such things. Trust me.  =|

There's a slight difference between student visas and nuclear submarine service. In fact, they're probably going to eliminate some of the steps for the student visa process for Israelis this year. There's been talk about it for a while now.

That's fine. I've never spoken to anybody even remotely like the Browns.

That is something that has passed through my mind, and even some friends have stated concerns about it. I don't think they would ever know who I am though, well except for the part where I posted that I am going to the navy to go through the nuke school. Also since I plan on not signing up for a sub hopefully it won't apply to me, since you specified submarine.  =D

Uh.

They know. Especially if they plan to let you near any nuke stuff.

There are IP records from your ISP. There are signups. They can get all of that.

Don't ever think that skilled intelligence gathering sorts are the incompetent types seen in movies. They know what they are doing. How in the world would they find terrorists based on their web postings otherwise, which they do? How would they prevent and quickly nail down leaks of classified information from military personnel?

You are not anonymous on the web, no matter what you think. If you're connected via cable service, DSL, or FiOS especially, everything from your connection has a number, and everything you do can be traced back to you if someone wants to take the time to do it.

If you are ever in line for a clearance, you will probably be presented with a printed stack of everything you've ever posted here. Do keep that in mind.

They would have to know where to look to begin with. The internet is very large. It's not like they can just type in my real name on google and find out where I post.

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Congratulations. That is the single most asinine...no, STUPID thing I have ever seen posted here. Or anywhere within the last few months.

Yes, that's about right.

Thanks for showing me how I am wrong.  ;/ So you are telling me that they have like magical powers that they know that I, insert real name, post on this, this, and this website using this screen name?

my computer fu is weak but i could find out who you are. i would look for the guy who almost shipped out  whose orders got changed at the last minute.  they do keep track of things like that. i could find you using paper records

Yeah, but they would have to know ABOUT freakazoid to begin with. You would be able to do it because I have told you about the navy, thereby making your job easier.

All they know is my real name, where I have lived, what my police record is, where I have worked, and what school I went to.

Well shoot. Did you know that during schooling we won't even be able to take the material home with us to study because it can't leave the school because it is classified.

Well, assuming it's true, that settles the argument about Freakazoid's access to classified data.

I never tried for a clearance, but they asked me about A. Websites I visit and B. "Are you associated with any radical organization?" I gotta think they do the same for nuke techs. Lying to them would be bad (obviously) and telling the truth would be DQing.

considering my neighbor nearly lost his job of 20 plus years over driving outside a restriction placed on his license due to a dui i think some folks are naive about clearances. they went door to door in the investigation talked to all his neighbors. and hes not cia just does some satellite target stuff for the corps of engineers

When I was signing up for the navy they never asked about what websites I visit. But they do ask if you have been or are a member of a group whose plans are to overthrow the government violently. And what is DQing?

FZ, they don't ask such things on entry, because they don't know what you'll be doing until after you pass boot camp/OTS/ROTC/etc.  Then they'll review your ASVAB, check your graduating class ranking, and see what tech school billets are available for you based on the needs of the government. Then and only then will you get selected for a position, and if it requires a clearance, they'll start the whole DD Form 398 ass pain.

They won't start the process if you're only going into a supply unit or other MOS that has no security clearance requirements.

It does make sense, however, to minimize your pre-military profile if you think you might have a chance of getting a position requiring a clearance.  Unless, of course, you really had your heart set on kicking boxes around in a warehouse somewhere...

I forgot to add, in response to the other question...

The Internet is nowhere near the anonymous place some would think it is.

Everybody leaves a trail.

If you're not ready for investigators to show you pages of your own postings from an online discussion forum, I'd suggest not trying for that particular line of work.

I was shown stuff I posted to UseNet in the late 1990s during the investigation for my sheriff's deputy job, and that's not even close to the military TS/SCI access I had before I retired in 2006.

Some people are quite shocked at just how much those boxes at their local Comcast node record about them. That's how they nailed someone in an investigation over child porn somewhat near here last year.
