Wrong House Selection....

Guy broke into the wrong house.  He lived about a mile away.  He broke into a back door.  One of the residents fired a warning shot at him, but he kept on coming.  3 of the residents were armed and at least 2 of them opened fire on the intruder.  He died in their kitchen.

Ooo! I get to say it:

"He chose.... poorly."
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

So long as one insists on home invasion, one should always choose the well-armed home. It's so much safer for the rest of us, aside from being more efficient.

You're creating a hostile work environment for criminals.  Shame on you.

Do his survivors get workman's comp?

Don't be surprised if they try to sue the residents.

Guy broke into the wrong house.  He lived about a mile away.

You know, I don't think people realize just how much area is encompassed in a circle of a mile's radius.  3.14 square miles = 2k acres, you could stuff 2k homes in there pretty easily.

He kept coming into gunfire, while unarmed?  That, to me, indicates that he wasn't just looking to steal.  Hell, it might indicate that he was mentally ill.

However, disregarding the warning shot and continuing means that he is still a threat to the occupants, and indicates a high probability that he thinks he can face a firearm.  I have no objections to shooting him - it's a good shoot as far as I'm concerned(and the local police think so as well).

I feel sad for the family of the home - would you want to keep living there?

Catastrophic failure of the victim selection process.

Unfortunately the family will likely go through legal and financial hell over this.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

I'd be surprised if they manage to find a shyster willing to do it.  Remember, this happened in Florida.  State law is such that while you can sue somebody for wrongful death and such, if it's judged that it was a justified shooting, the suing party, including the lawyer, are responsible for the legal fees.

That story is from a while ago. The state attorney found the family justified in shooting and ruled it self defense.

FL law is that if the state finds you justified in using lethal force you are immune from civil suits as well. So the family could file suit, but it'd be a pretty automatic dismissal and wasted money.
