A rolling gun battle at the famed Las Vegas Strip led to a multi-vehicle wreck that resulted in the deaths of three people on Thursday.

Las Vegas Metro police said the shooting happened just before 4:30 a.m. on Flamingo Road near Las Vegas Boulevard.

According to an Associated Press report, citing a Metro sergeant, drivers in a Maserati and a sport-utility vehicle were exchanging gunfire, approaching the intersection.

The sports car was then struck by a taxi cab, police said. The taxi burst into flames, killing the driver and the passenger inside, police said.

Police also said the driver of the Maserati was killed as a result of the shooting.

The wreck also involved three more vehicles at the intersection, and three others were injured, including a passenger in the Maserati, police said.

Metro believes the other driver involved in the shootout fled the scene.

The intersection at Flamingo and the Strip was completely shut down following the incident. There was no word on when it is expected to be re-opened.

Sounds like a bit of organized crime got out of hand.  Of course, it's clearly the guns fault.

I have to ask, just how does a modern car "burst into flames?"

How fast do you have to be going to cause that? This isn't the movies where every crash ends in a fireball.

The Las Vegas taxis now include a substantial contingent of NatGas/propane modified vehicles, so there's a pressurized tank of liquefied gas in the back.

I reckon if you smack that hard enough, yer gonna get a fireball.

First, that's good to know. We have a possible explanation.

Second, if that is the case, I'm certain we will NEVER hear about it. Wouldn't want to have people question the safety of alternate fuels.

Gee, guys in a Range Rover shoot up a Maserati.  Doesn't sound like your typical gangbanger shooting... unless Vegas gangbangin' pay higher than in most other cities.  Sounds more like a heavier duty drug dealer type incident.  Have the Mexican Cartels got a foothold that far into the states?

Be interesting to find the gun(s) used were the product of the Fast and Furious operation...  :O

Years back there was quite a bit of debate about a taxi company having a BIG tank of propane near where the Stratosphere is now.  Not sure if the tank is still there or not.  I do not recall hearing of it being moved, though.
