Serious question...if true, do you think this would be done to try and develop some type of immunity to a groin shot?  I can't think of any other reason for doing this...

Hazing.  It makes people more committed to an organization.  That's why frats, military, and all sorts of organizations treat recruits badly.  Though this takes it to a new level....
