Don't eat the zombie deer

So essentially the deer version of mad cow disease may be passed on to humans, just as occurred with mad cow disease.

It's been here in Wisconsin for awhile now, I still have a freezer stocked with venison. If your deer looks healthy and you stick to eating the "normal" parts then it's not supposed to be an issue. There was a lot of controversy for awhile about whether baiting would make it spread faster, and that was all mixed in with longer lasting complaints about herd management and wolves. A lot of that seems to have died down now, the disease continues to spread, and I just keep cooking up my venison burgers.
In the moral, catatonic stupor America finds itself in today it is only disagreement we seek, and the more virulent that disagreement, the better.

Chronic Wasting Disease has been an issue in Colorado for several years.  You're supposed to be safe as long as you don't cut into the brain or spinal cord.  Hunters are encouraged to drop off heads at the DOW for analysis.

My understanding was that neither Mad Cow nor CWD had or could cross the species barrier.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

I think we have it in WI because of a few game/trophy hunting farms that kept deer that was imported from other states (namely colorado) penned up in dense herds which made it easy for the disease to spread.

Several people, mainly in Europe, have contracted CJD from eating contaminated bovine tissue.

I've heard that.

In our state, they did a big media campaign about not cutting/eating the bones, the spinal cord, eyes, or brain while butchering deer, and not to even butcher deer if they looked or acted odd before shooting.

There's pretty good evidence that eating brains is the biggest transmitter of CJD, as witnessed in populations and habits of people in Papua New Guinea who ate the brains of their deceased.
