Tying a tie: Mirror or No?
« on: April 13, 2018, 09:11:54 AM »
Just an idle thought:

The other day, I found myself in the bathroom while putting on my tie. I generally just tie it wherever I am and then check the mirror after it's done to ensure it looks right.

I found that looking in the mirror as I tied actually confused me- it took longer with the mirror just because I wasn't sure things were right while watching myself do it. (It was, it just looked strange.)

How to most people tie their ties? With the mirror or not?
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I cannot tie without mirror. But I only wear one maybe once per quarter.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

I can tie a tie either way mirror or not. What I absolutely can’t do is tie one on someone else while looking at them face to face. Does..not..compute!!

No mirror, although I adjust it with the mirror.

I use a mirror so I can get it tied right on the first try.  When I don't use a mirror, it comes out crooked.

I've not worn a tie so many times that I can do it sans mirror. I could do it sans mirror for the tying part, but not for the adjusting part. Even if I could, I'm guessing I'd be in the habit of checking it in the mirror anyway.

I rarely wear a tie.  I know one way to tie one and that is it.  I just use a mirror to check afterward.

For better and worse, I wear a tie daily for work.  I can tie one without a mirror, and generally get it right.  That said, I get a better knot if I'm looking in the mirror.

I use a mirror.  It doesn't gaurantee I'll get it right .... but if I don't use a mirror I invariably wind up with a Gordion Knot. [tinfoil]

Those very few times I wear a tie (wedding, funeral or job interview), I do it blind, then check the mirror.

When I wore a tie several days a week, no mirror. Now that I wear a tie 2-3x a year, I need a mirror.

Haven't worn a tie in over 20 years. But, on the rare occasions when I did I could do it blindfolded. Always preferred a nice 4-in-hand.
I was also the "go to" guy for tying the good old Navy neckerchief tie thing.

No trouble tying without mirror but I always check it in mirror if available.

Mirror. I'm a tie-knot snob and hate the sloppy, lopsided, loosely flapped abominations that seem to be the current trend.

A guy I had an immense amount of respect for growing up always told me, "If it doesn't look like a clip on, you didn't tie it right." I took that to heart. I use a Winsor and insist on it being perfect - an absolutely symmetrical triangle, snugged until everything lays in tidy and smooth, and with the dimple precisely centered. I can do it without a mirror but I always take the first opportunity to check and adjust so things are in proper order.

No mirror. I only use the mirror to adjust the knot once I'm done tying it.

Then again, I've not worn a tie since... I think since my Father died in 2007.

I wear a necktie or bow tie every work day.  I can tie either without a mirror, but use the mirror nonetheless.

I use a Shelby knot to tie my ties; I can get enough length that way w/o having to buy extra-long ties, plus I like the way it looks.

To the original question, it's been so long since I've worn a tie I don't remember.   I think I use a mirror.  I also sometimes leave a tie knotted so I can just slip it on and tighten and adjust it.
