I frequently see ads for tribute pistols, maybe most frequently featuring John Wayne.
Today I saw an ad for a Steve McQueen tribute pistol. I don't have a big firearms collection; more than 3 and less than 10. I'm pretty persnickety about what I'll spend the next $500 on, and there are also considerations of having to store it, buy ammo for it, maintain it. So I can't imagine buying a tribute pistol just because it has somebody's picture on it. Nothing wrong with those who do, but that's really not me.
A few months ago I saw an ad for a Zorro pistol. Zorro ? I don't really associate Zorro with firearms. I know he had them, I've seen him shoot them, but with Zorro I'm thinking more along the lines of ... something long and sharp. To me, a Zorro pistol would be what comes right before an Annie Oakley tribute set of nunchucks.

Theater 1911 I saw the other day. Just beautiful. But I wouldn't shoot it and that is against my rule of gun ownership for me. If I own it, it gets shot. Period. I have a 43 Colt and
a 44 RR. Both get shot, as much as I can shoot them.

I didn't consider that they might appeal to guys who weren't actually gun guys.
I can see that, though. As a coin collector, I have no interest whatsoever in painted coins. I see ads for them, though, and I suspect they're being sold to non-collectors.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the guns or buying the guns. I was just wondering since they have no appeal for me. On the other hand, if I was a WWII vet, I can see where I might be interested in something that commemorates it.
Steve McQueen, though, still has me puzzled. :lol:

If my grandfather were still alive, I'd have bought him the European Theater 1911. He would have loved it. He's why I have a 43 Colt 1911.
SB. I have to agree with you on the McQueen Collectible. Doesn't make any sense.
However. There is 1 I'd like to have, if I ever just come across it. It's the Operation Infinite Justice Beretta M9. Beretta made, I'm guessing here, about 500-1000 of them before the blissninnys started crying only Allah could dispence "Infinite Justice" and Bush blinked and changed the Operation Name to Enduring Freedom. I wonder if the blissninnys wood poop a gold Twinkie at the Normandy Invasion code name, "Overlord".

If I wanted a "commemorative" pistol, I would carefully select the weapon of choice and have it engraved by somebody who does that kind of work, giving me a truly custom handgun with unique decoration.

Nope, got no personal use for commemorative pistols, or commemorative anything. Except maybe a "McDonald vs. Chicago Epic Win" commemorative. Buy it, shoot it until the muzzle area is permanently discolored. =D

Good movies, to be sure, but I don't think I would buy a McQueen pistol. (Maybe a McQueen shotgun from the original Getaway ? Or his firearm from Wanted, Dead or Alive ? That might make sense. I totally forgot about that show.)
Now Bullitt I associate with the fastback Mustang McQueen drove in that movie. And, I believe that a year or two ago Ford (or somebody) made a Bullitt commemorative Mustang. I can see that.

i was look at the nra buckmark a while back, not because of the "engraving", but because it was the config i was looking for.
as far as steve mcqueen merchandising, my money would go for the engraved 2X4.

Hit some of the bigger gun shows. There are folks out there who won't buy anything but a commemorative.

That's cool. I guess I'm just not a gun collector. And I can even see the appeal of a Steve McQueen gun: if you're a big fan, and you like to collect guns (not just acquiring the right tool for the right job), then you betcha.
Just ... not me. Not even Zorro, and he was my hero in second grade. :cool:

I have a Winchester Model 94 Legendary Lawman commemorative Saddle Ring Carbine.
I bought it because it was more compact and nicer-looking than a standard 20" Model 94.

I know a lady that bought one to honor the memory of her relative, PFC Aaron Thomas Nemelka (age 19, West Jordan, Utah) who was killed at Ft Hood.
She had "This We'll Defend" engraved on it.

i can see collecting guns of historical signifagance. thats like a gunnies version of antiquities. i can even see a well made recreation or commemorative historical piece, as it would be related to the history.
but for movie stuff/celebs, meh... maybe if your the hugest steve mcqueen fan ever...
if you're a big fan, and you like to collect guns (not just acquiring the right tool for the right job), then you betcha.
the right gun for the right job can ecompass a collection (in fact its the main criteria in our house) ;)

If I was going to spend extra money on a firearm, it would be to get a better firearm. I have little or no desire to get a commemorative. I'd want to shoot it anyway which wouldn't do it any good.
