Ike Is Headed Our Way
« on: March 03, 2005, 10:18:52 PM »
Windows are boarded up. Supplies stashed. Furniture in the pool. Looter medicine ready. Vehicles and cans gassed up. Generators test run. Jack Daniels ready.

54 year old men should be good at things besides hanging plywood.

Furniture in the pool?  That's a new one by me!  I figured it would be just fine inside...

Furniture in the pool.

You did remember to drain the pool first?

You don't drain the pool, or it'll pop out of the ground if the ground becomes too saturated, it becomes a boat. Lower the level a slight bit, that's it.

I know a lot of people down south who put stuff with projectile potential into the pool when a bad blow is coming.

Yes, you're supposed to sink patio furniture and all so it doesn't fly around, but he didn't say patio furniture. Smiley

"You don't drain the pool, or it'll pop out of the ground..."

When I was in high school the district put in a 5,000 gallon diesel tank and pump to fuel up the buses.

Before they could get it filled, we had a tropical storm or something similar run up the East Coast and that tank just floated to the surface as nice as can be.

Yup! Empty tank / empty pool + soaked ground = expensive and dramatic demonstration of the principle of displacement.

I'm up in the DFW area, and I  have a friend from Houston coming to hang out with us.

Depending on how bad things get down on the coast, I might be taking time off to go down and help.

In other news, I heard the worst joke that I just have to share.

Houston goes crazy with the hyperbole...

ENTIRE COASTAL CITIES AND TOWNS WILL BE INUNDATED.  PERMANENT
BREACHES MAY BE CUT OFF. FULL RECOVERY WILL TAKE MONTHS IF NOT
YEARS. WATER LEVELS MAY EXCEED 13 FEET FOR MORE THAN A MILE
INLAND. CONDITIONS WILL BE WORSENED BY BATTERING WAVES. SUCH WAVES
WILL NOT ONLY EXACERBATE PROPERTY DAMAGE BUT WASH OUT SOLID ROAD
AND BRIDGE STRUCTURES. DAMAGE FROM BEACH EROSION WILL TAKE YEARS
TO REPAIR.

LIFE THREATENING INUNDATION LIKELY!

ALL NEIGHBORHOODS...AND POSSIBLY ENTIRE COASTAL COMMUNITIES...
WILL BE INUNDATED DURING HIGH TIDE. PERSONS NOT HEEDING
EVACUATION ORDERS IN SINGLE FAMILY ONE OR TWO STORY HOMES WILL
FACE CERTAIN DEATH. MANY RESIDENCES OF AVERAGE CONSTRUCTION
DIRECTLY ON THE COAST WILL BE DESTROYED. WIDESPREAD AND
DEVASTATING PERSONAL PROPERTY DAMAGE IS LIKELY ELSEWHERE. VEHICLES
LEFT BEHIND WILL LIKELY BE SWEPT AWAY. NUMEROUS ROADS WILL BE
SWAMPED...SOME MAY BE WASHED AWAY BY THE WATER. ENTIRE FLOOD PRONE
COASTAL COMMUNITIES WILL BE CUTOFF. WATER LEVELS MAY EXCEED 9 FEET
FOR MORE THAN A MILE INLAND. COASTAL RESIDENTS IN MULTI-STORY
FACILITIES RISK BEING CUTOFF. CONDITIONS WILL BE WORSENED BY
BATTERING WAVES. SUCH WAVES WILL EXACERBATE PROPERTY DAMAGE...WITH
MASSIVE DESTRUCTION OF HOMES...INCLUDING THOSE OF BLOCK
CONSTRUCTION. DAMAGE FROM BEACH EROSION COULD TAKE YEARS TO
REPAIR.

Um, that gets right to the point, doesn't it?

We had a single family home close to the water in Galveston that survived a number of storms.  It'll be interesting to see what happens this time.

It sounds like you're prepaired. Are people leaving, or staying put for this storm?

The sad thing is that they are absolutely sure where the storm will hit.  Then another 12 hours later, they are absolutely sure it will hit in a different spot.  It is frustrating.  The latest update is started to shift the landfall just east of Freeport.  Who knows if it will shift more?

After seeing this, I have absolute confidence that Man-made global warming is true, the earth will warm up in 50 or 100 years, the polar ice will all melt.   rolleyes

Galveston Island and low-lying sections of the mainland are under a mandatory evacuation. We live in the very Northern end of the county. The storm surge is the only thing I am worried about. So far the powers that be have not called for us to leave.

Yes, the patio furniture is in the pool. I could not lug the leather stuff out there.

My wife is tuck in Katy, TX, evacuated with the patients from the hospital where she works. I am not a happy camper.

I need someone to drown with. Who wants to go down in a drunken stupor alone? That is not what romatic novels are written about.

The eye looks like it might get really close.

I just might see how good my insurance is.

How far from the ocean is Houston?  Fifty miles or so, right.  Elevation 45 ft.

I don't think that surge will reach there.

Galveston Island is a totally different story.  Get 0out and stay out until safe to return.

Didn't a hurricane in 1900 kill nearly 7,000 people in Galveston?

Invite Geraldo to weather the storm with you.

It seems to be bound towards NE Texas, which none of the earlier tracks seemed to indicate. The current track puts it right over my humble abode.

On an interesting note, we have a huge stash of FEMA trailers eight miles off. If the 'caine is still at tropical storm level, they may be flooded.

It was after that they built the seawall and raised the level of the island.  It isn't as bad now.  For Houston, it is mostly the Eastern areas that are on lower lying land and at risk for storm surge.  There has been a lot of development there over the last 20 years.

There was also a town on the coast called Indianola that was becoming a major port, but it got destroyed by successive hurricanes.
