Today's Wall Street Journal has an article about the divisive nature of Hawaiian pizza (Canadian bacon and pineapple). For the record, I love it. My wife does not. She will not even accept half of the pizza to be Hawaiian, over some made-up concern over 'contamination'.
I wonder if this will rank as one of the great APS schism threads, right up there with cornbread or BBQ.

Hawaiian "pizza" - another good reason to revoke their statehood.

Hey, I'm with you Millcreek. If you don't want to call cornbread with sugar, cornbread, or you don't want to call pizza with pineapple, pizza, call them whatever you like. I'll eat them by any name. :)
-
I grew up with it. Wife loves it. Marital compromise was not having mushrooms on it anymore though.

Obviously, one wouldn't put mushrooms on anything one was going to eat.

More to the point, isn't this a case of tri-lateral cultural appropriation? Seriously, putting Canadian bacon and pineapple on pizza? This cannot be allowed.
-
Since there ought not to be any Hawaiian Chicago Style Deep Dish pizza, CLEARLY Hawaiian is not a REAL pizza.*
But, it's just as good as any other thin pizza.
*to kick off the more divisive pizza debate
Seriously, though, it's fine. I prefer other pizzas (USUALLY), but it's good and a nice change sometimes.
-
I'll eat anything on pizza other than olives. I HATE olives.
If you think pineapple and bacon is weird... try out some of popular toppings in other nations...
http://www.popuppizzalv.com/8-pizza-toppings-from-across-the-world/
Oh, while I hate olives, I LOVE anchovies.
-
I used to like it, not so much anymore. Wife loves it, but she denies me supreme pizza, so I deny her Hawaiian pizza when go out for pizza or order for delivery.

Pineapple. On pizza. *expletive deleted*ing savages.

Love Hawaiian pizza. Donatos as a really good Hawaiian pizza, with shaved ham, pineapple, almonds and cinnamon.

That's what i was thinking. I'm not sure exactly who is appropriating what from whom, but I'm pretty sure we ought to be outraged by at least two thirds of the meal.

One thing I can tell you is that Italy had better quit appropriating pizza, which is clearly an American invention. I mean, sure, they had a pizza prototype, but their topping of choice was big blobs of mozzarella. ;/ Get real, Luigi. As everyone knows, pizza actually began in the U.S., when we invented pepperoni.
So knock it off, Italy!

"deep dish pizza."
That's not pizza.
That's a loaf of sauced *expletive deleted*ing bread dough.

To further delve into inappropriate pizza styles... =D
I also really like BBQ chicken pizza with cashews. I did not think I would like it, but was convinced to try it, and it's now one of my favorite pizza (or pizza-like, for you sticklers) styles.
Whenever I'm up fishing in Mammoth and do my one day of 10-15 miles of hiking, when I get back, the first thing I do is call the Republican run pizza joint in town and order a large, and eat the whole damn thing with a couple of beers. The one they make there is the best I've ever had, and like Hawaiian style (or any pizza really) a lot of it depends on where you get your pizza. I've eaten at places that can make a great pepperoni, but a terrible Hawaiian.

Never tried BBQ chicken pizza with cashews. I like Jet's BBQ Chicken pizza BBQ sauce, mozzarella, grilled chicken, bacon, and red onions.

Pineapple and mushroom is the greatest pizza topping combo ever.
Sausage and onion is next.
Then ground beef and onion.
And lastly the basic big combo of sausage, green pepper, onion, mushroom, and olive.
Pepperoni is nice, though.
However as long as it doesn't have jalapenos or anchovies I'll probably enjoy it. It is pizza after all.
-
Pepperoni and black olives (even better if they're kalamata) is the best. Hawaiian pizza is stupid... Well, pretty much anything with Canadian bacon is stupid.
-
There's a little family joint not far from nick's place that we used to go to. My wife liked to order the sauerkraut and pineapple pizza. I tried it a few times it wasn't bad just not my style.

My wife and I went to a new MOD pizza that just opened nearby. I had their take on a BBQ chicken pizza: the Caspian. They had a nice twist on it insofar as it used gorgonzola cheese rather than mozzarella. As a fan of gorgonzola, I approved. When I get it next time, I think I will have them add some bacon and cilantro to it.
-
I am very disappointed in myself, just now. Though I feel that tacos should always be made with beef*, my wife made some chicken tacos this weekend that were not half bad. But it gets worse. While she was at it, she made something she called "Mexican pizza," also with chicken. And though I know it's a sin to eat chicken pizza, I tried it. And I liked it. =( Please pray for me.
*Though I wouldn't turn down venison tacos, or goat tacos, come to think of it. Gyros, etc.

I heard of a pizza place that briefly offered avocado, broccoli, and sauerkraut on their pineapple BBQ pizzas.
I don't know if this is the one . . .

Strangest topping on a pizza that I actually enjoyed?
Arugula. My mom ordered it at a great little Mediterranean place (https://www.cafesano.com) up in Northern Virginia and I tried a slice. WOW. I did not expect salad on a pizza to be good, but that was extremely tasty.
It's mostly the food we miss from Northern Virginia. (Ok, maybe friends, too.) Cafe Sano was very good, and within walking distance for us.

"I also really like BBQ chicken pizza with cashews. "
I once had Hoisin Duck with cashews and some weird cheese.
It was mind blowingly awesome.

All I have to say is go look at some of the pizzas they serve in Japan. I will take the Hawaiian pizza any day over some of those!!

Cultural Appropriation!!!
(There's a lady at church who's an actual ethnic Hawaiian. I seriously doubt she cares.)

There's a wood fired pizza place here in tampa that offers a pizza with a white sauce, cheese, Prosciutto, and sliced Brussels Sprouts. It's actually pretty dang good.

People have been putting various things on flat bread for millennia. I was kind of ambivalent about Hawaiian pizza, but if fistful hates it, it must be good.

Some folks here have severely limited palates. Seriously, I feel sorry for some of you.
There ain't nothing I've tried on a pizza that I didn't like. Even some of the crazy stuff on pizzas in Japan.

I like Pineapple on pizza, so does the wife. I also like the hairy little fish (Anchovies) on pizza! No peppers, jalapeno or bell, and that's pretty much it. The rest is just fine by me.

I do one better, I avoid any food combination that involves meat and pineapple. Really any cooked pineapple since whatever cake that uses it is nasty.
Best odd topping is think sliced pieces of lemon, rind and all.
-
Someone brought in Hawaiian pizza at an office party a couple of years ago. Wasn't bad or anything, which was surprising to me, just not something I'd order up for myself.
-
I was wrong earlier on what my wife always ordered. It was sauerkraut and ham not pineapple. I don't see it on Pizza Shoppe's menu but there was a split and I think it is on Old Shawnee Town Pizzas menu.

I have a feeling some of you guys would actually eat this.
My mother and her husband love getting artichokes on their pizza. [barf]
This is something that has sparked controversy since artichokes are something I will not eat even potentially contaminated food (which means they can't order it and I'll pick off the funky stuff and I won't do half and half)

I love pineapple. Ate it until my tongue was sore on our first trip to Hawaii. Loved the pineapple infused water they had out at the resort in Lahaina we stayed at. Very refreshing after morning runs.
That said, I can't stand the combination of pineapple and pizza sauce. So no Hawaiian pizza for me.
Personal favorite? Larosa's pizza (Cincinnati chain). Hand tossed crust with pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, onion, and bacon. Love it.

That's a long time!! I love watching Viva Las Vegas with Elvis just for the scenery of how it used to be. I remember when the Thunderbird was the end of the strip but what really turned me off was when they took away the Castaways and dropped the Mirage on top of it. I'll probably retire to Pahrump though in a couple of years.

Yep. It's getting cliche to say it, but I preferred the previous incarnation of Las Vegas. Especially downtown.

No, but I keep planning to join Desert Sportsmans Rifle Club. Things just keep coming up to put that on the back burner. Wife has been having a bit of a battle with The Big C. Prognosis is now excellent, but that kind of thing kinda takes ones attention from other stuff.

Pineapple

As an old man with nothing to lose and a lot of guns, no one is getting between me and my Hawaiian pizza. Or, rereading this thread, "pizza-like substance" if some of you are playing the cornbread game. I don't care what it's called, I like it.
Also from rereading the thread, I have realized that I haven't had a BBQ chicken with cashew pizza since I left CA. The now out of business pizza joint in town made an okay Hawaiian, but that was as fancy as they got in "non-traditional" pizzas. I've gotta find me a good BBQ chicken and cashew pizza place somewhere around here.
-
^^^Please to explain: it is a BBQ chicken pizza with cashews sprinkled over the top? Not something odd like cashew cheese or cashew butter?

Yes, cashews are sprinkled over the top. Also lots of red onion.
I actually started looking after I posted and the only thing I've found so far in these parts seems to be chicken with peanuts. No BBQ chicken with any nuts, though they seem to make BBQ chicken with broccoli. I are disappoint, Idaho.

I'll bet if you walked into the chicken & peanuts place with a tin of cashews and agreed to wait, they'd make you one with cashews instead of peanuts.
-

Yeah, they might, but that one only does garlic chicken. Several good pizza places I looked at had the "build your own" menu. I suppose one could bring cashews to them. Though for me, pizza is mostly a take out food, meaning I call the order in or do it online, then grab and go, vs standing around waiting for it. Although there are no good pizza places less than 40 minutes from me anymore, so takeout kinda loses the appeal if you have cold pizza when you get home and have to reheat it.
-
I am reminded that the second best-selling item at Costco is the big plastic jar of cashews. The best selling item is the Kirkland Signature toilet paper. We buy both of them.
Although I am now intrigued insofar as I have never even thought of, much less seen, the concept of nuts on pizza. I don't think I have ever seen that as an option at any pizza place up here.
-

For all I know, it might be a CA thing.
Anyway, as a poor man's workaround, maybe I need to pick up one of those jars of cashews. One of the things I've been doing since the local pizza joint shut down is getting those four packs of Kirkland cheese pizza*, the Kirkland black forest ham, and canned pineapples and making my own pizza with that.
Something I also buy at Costco is those grilled chicken two packs. If I BBQ sauce those up, throw on some red onion, and throw on those cashews, I might get close to the real thing.
* For some reason, my Costco here does not have the big take and bake pizzas. I used to get the cheese ones of those in CA once in a while and make a half and half pizza with my dad, who couldn't eat sharp stuff. We'd each put our own toppings on and bake one of those up. They are much better than the Kirkland frozen pizzas, though the frozen pizzas are not bad. Certainly much, much better than what is usually in the grocery store frozen pizza aisle.
-
Got a couple of pizzas last night for dinner.
I would have gone pineapple and chicken, but my friend who is visiting is a complete stick in the mud. Pepperoni only. I never cared a whole lot of pepperoni, but it's OK.
Fortunately, last night's pizza was REALLY good, from a local shop that does it well. Just had two slices for breakfast.
-
Pizza in all of its manifestations is good. Cracker, thin, Chicago pub, New York, pan, stuffed, deep dish, Neapolitan ...
While I almost exclusively make my own pizza now, I've eaten the cheap stuff at events and have been perfectly happy.
I even like cheap frozen pizzas.
Hawaiian pizza is OK, not my favorite by any stretch. If you serve it I'll eat it though =D
-
While I almost exclusively make my own pizza now,
Given my current limited takeout choices, I need to start doing this. My mom used to make great pizza all the time. For whatever reason, though I'm always baking bread, I haven't done pizza. I guess because I consider it a "quick takeout item" that somebody else is supposed to make for me. I don't think it would be that time consuming though, especially for getting something likely better than from the pizza place. Plus with my current hour or so roundtrip if I want to buy one, it might almost be faster to roll my own. =)

Glad I'm not the only one. I don't like paper thin crust, but I've never been a fan of deep dish or pizza with three times more bread than toppings.
-
Also not a fan of the stuffed pizzas with the additional crust on top.
-
The real thick bready crusts seem to be more of an east coast pan pizza thing.
The legit deep dish pizzas in downtown Chicago don't have super thick crusts.
Most folks in Chicagoland have pizzerias that make what is more of a thin crust pub style pizza. Deep Dish is an occasional treat not the typical go to.
The Pizzeria Uno franchises make a pizza that is similar to the original but not identical. Along the lines of the too bready complaint, that's my main beef with the franchise version.
I might have to make a deep dish soon, it's been awhile!

I love cracker thin crust pizzas!
It's really hard to make a good cracker crust at home. Pizza places use a dough sheeter and that is hard to reproduce at home.
-
The pizza we had Saturday night was NY Style. Nice thin crust. It could have stood another maybe 1 to 2 minutes in the oven, as the crust wasn't really all that crispy, but it was thin and really tasty.
The one case in which I'll gladly take a deep dish pizza over a thin crust is if it's Domino's. Their thin crust is... weird. It's... chalky, is the best word I can use to describe it and it doesn't taste like a yeast dough at all.
-

If it's still chewy, it's not the paper thin I was talking about. I like thin that still has a bread texture. I was more talking about stuff like those "keto" or whatever pizzas that have that dry, carboard-like crust.
-
"If it's still chewy, it's not the paper thin I was talking about."
Then I'd say you've never had a proper New York style thin crust pizza. Making those things is an art form.
5 seconds too long in the oven and the crust is no longer crispy and chewy, it's more likely to shatter (still not a totally bad thing).
Removed from the oven 5 seconds too soon and it's not crispy and it's bordering on soggy.
-

Shakys Pizza made cracker crust pizza popular around the country.

Same here.
But I love most other types of crust, too.
Way back awhen I worked pizza we would use cracker crusts to make a triple-decker.
Crust, light sauce (could be marinara, bbq, buffalo, or ranch), cheese, flat topping(s) for the first two layers but on top we would put the sausage and/or beef and/or bits of chicken from our wing supply along with extra cheese.
That was just for us, the customers never knew of such a thing.
And in case you're wondering, we did try to go higher but cutting the thing got a lot more difficult with a fourth layer as things would slide around so much it made getting a series of good, straight cuts really difficult.
-

Or
Get a BIG GER knife! Think machete or scimitar. Or crescent shaped sharpened piece of discarded steel. Pizza wheels need not apply.
