Never thought I would see it (again).

We seem to have hit the wall in my area of Northern Virginia.
-
Well, not all of Indiana. Here in Lafayette it is $.40 higher (less competition unlike bigger cities).
Indianapolis gasoline is getting silly cheap now.

Give it two weeks. You won't.

Best I've seen in MT thus far is $2.54 at the station across the street from my office in Missoula today.
-
I just modified the title......a 4 cent/gallon drop since this morning.
-
Greenwood. 1984
Wow, small internet....
-
Down to $2.49 here in Martinsburg, WVA
-
$2.24 in my part of Columbus, Ohio this evening.
-
I work in Brownsburg and drive around quite a bit. Must have passed the gas stations by the interstate 5 times today.
This morning it was $2.03 then it went to $1.99 and finally around lunchtime it was $1.95. Thats when the news crews showed up and by 4pm the pumps had lines of cars waiting for gas.

The Citgo right down from my house was $2.69 a gallon this morning.
This afternoon when I was on my way home, it was $2.55.
-
It just got below $2.96 here today.
-
Thread title updated....a buck 74?
I haven't seen this is how many years?
-
Cheap gas? Must be an election close by. :D
-
I paid $1.85 in Indy Wednesday afternoon. It's getting stupid cheap around Indy.
-
I spoke to soon, its down to 234 yesterday....
-
Best I saw driving in to work this morning (10/30/08, just outside Austin, TX) was $2.329.
With $150/bbl oil, the highest I paid was $3.999, of which, IIRC, about $0.385 is tax at the pump, making the price of the gas itself $3.614.
Oil has since fallen about 60%, so if the price of gas were to fall proportionately, I ought to be paying $1.446, plus $0.385 tax, or ~$1.83 . . .
But I'm not . . . and considering the price elsewhere in the nation, the other, non-tax fixed costs built into the price don't account for the price differential.
Moreover, just in the Austin area, the same brand of gas can easily vary $0.25 a gallon from one part of town to another.
Looks like dealers in some parts of town are colluding to keep prices inflated.

Iffin ya want to believe in evil price fixing conspiracies, then have at it.
But...
If you're actually interested in what makes gas prices what they are, you should do a little research. I'll give you a free hint to start you off: crude oil and taxes aren't the only components in the price of gas.

Perhaps when skimming my post you missed the reference to " . . . the other, non-tax fixed costs built into the price . . . "
Which of course does nothing to explain a price differential of more than 15% from one side of town to the other . . .
-
That's just the thing, the "other non-tax fixed costs built into the price" do account for the difference. At least they did when I ran the numbers myself recently. Looking at the numbers you posted, it would seem that those other fixed costs account for much of the difference you're seeing, too.
I realize that it's much more fun to believe that you're being gouged, but it just doesn't look like that's the case here.
-
$2.32 on the west side of Grand Rapids this AM. $2.54 is the norm. Gas in W. Michigan is 3rd only to California and Chicago as to usual cost.
-
$2.49, twenty miles north of Hartford, CT.
-
$2.19 at Wentzville, Missouri, at the confluence of the I-64 and the I-70 cement rivers...
-
Now down to $2.07 here.
-
Lowest price is still $1.74, but surrounding and overall prices continue to drop.
There is now only a 18 cent difference where I live in Greenwood, to what is it in Brownsburg.
-
$2.06 tonight.
-
I paid $2.41 in Sacramento, 4 days ago. Diesel is actually below $3 for the first time in a long time.
Think how low it could drop if popularly-elected President gets chummy with Chavez.
My apologies, Mike. I guess I should be happy, as the entire nation will know what it is like to live in California.
Standing Wolf is no doubt ecstatic.

It's finally at 1.99 here in the St. Louis region. The day after Obama was elected. Shucks, by the time he wields the orb and scepter this January 20th, it should be free.

That's just the thing, the "other non-tax fixed costs built into the price" do account for the difference.
So it costs 30 cents a gallon more to sell the same brand of gas on one side of the same town than it does on the other side of the same town?
You just keep believing that if you want to. ;/
-
It's not cost, it's setting price according to market pressures. Why should gas be any different than any other product?

Uh, no.

Gasoline on the west side of Indianapolis, updated to reflect $1.64/gallon.
Gas on the South side, my neighborhood, is $1.76/gallon.

$1.89 and falling here in Hoodbridge (Woodbridge, Va). Tempted to top off the boat just for posterity's sake.....the supercharged outboard likes to drink premium, which I've put it at as much as $4.50 a gallon before.....paid $4.99 for regular unleaded at a Marina in North Carolina while she was in the water last summer :O
-
"paid $4.99 for regular unleaded at a Marina in North Carolina while she was in the water last summer"
Ouch.
But, you mean that YOU actually earned the money with which you paid the fuel bill?
Wow, that's a novel approach for you...

I haven't performed the requisite proscribed behavior to have my body severed in twain, burned, and scattered.

$1.91 per gal down here in upstate SC.

$1.93^9 in my town this morning, with the price jumping about 6 cents/10 miles on my way to work in Golden.

-
1.67 in Cedar Springs in W. Michigan. 1.79 10 miles south at Meijer in N. Grand Rapids.
The latest gig in Michigan is they want to take off the 19 cent flat tax per gallon and impose an 18% sales tax on whatever a gallon costs to raise road funds. Personally, I like dirt roads. And the Feds want a tax that equals out to what a gallon would cost at a 100.00 a bbl. Actually, so what? I heard a congress critter tell the financial whatsisface from Fox News on the radio this afternoon that any money we have doesn't belong to us anyway.
Welcome to the Obamanation.
-
On Monday, it was 1.70 in Fredericksburg, 2.29 in Morgantown, WV, and 1.71 in Dayton, Oh. Of course, Morgantown is where I had to stop for gas, and I had no idea beforehand that their prices were so much higher.
-
Just today we hit $1.99 here in town. Took'em long enough.

Two Texaco stations I passed on the way to work this morning were $1.939 and $1.799, Shell was $1.799 and the Exxons I passed were $1.999 and $1.939.

I filled up yesterday in Kansas City for...
$1.55
=D
-
Full on freefall around here. mid $1.60 range on average. Actually put Premimum in the wife's ESV for under $2.00 a gallon today.
Trying to go fishing next monday. Boat's got $2.75 gas in it that needs to get burned off and replaced with under $2 gas.....
-
I just heard on the radio that Missouri has the lowest gas prices in the nation. At $1.69. =|
It was 1.56, last night, in some areas.
-
We've just now dropped into the 180s at a couple of stations here in Fairfax. Most are still in the 190s, and quite a few are still over 200 a gallon.
-

Good thing I work in MO!!!
I still laugh at my know-it-all coworker who said that gas would never be under $3 every time I pass a $1.55 sign...
-
People around here all insist that it will go back up to 3+. I see no reason why it should be any higher than it was 1-2 years ago, before the real bubble started.
1. supply is not down compared to what it was at that time; during the price bubble oil companies engaged in exploration etc.
2. People bought more fuel efficient cars and/or restructured their life around being more fuel efficiency, so I don't see why demand should be higher.
-
Yup. Travel forecasts for Thanksgiving are way down from this time last year.
-
I filled up yesterday in Kansas City for...

You paid too much. I'm seeing prices as low as $1.41 in Kansas City via Gasbuddy.com'

1.95 is the cheapest I've seen in east San Diego county.

Still around $1.70 in Ames, IA.
$1.63 in Des Moines, IA

Title changed to reflect lowest price of gasoline in the Indianapolis metro area.

Its still in the $2.20's here. We're being cheated.
-
Its still in the $2.20's here. We're being cheated.
By whom?

The shippers and gas station owners/corporations, of course.

About $ 2.05 to 2.15 here north of Seattle.
-

What state are you in that still has $2.20+ gas?
-
A state you or anyone else on this board wouldn't want to live in. That's all I'll say. I don't want to reveal too much about myself on the internet.
-

A state you or anyone else on this board wouldn't want to live in. That's all I'll say. I don't want to reveal too much about myself on the internet.
I’m going to guess California or New York. That's purely based on my own political preferences and bias'.
Why do you hold the opinion that collusion is the logical reason behind why you are paying more for fuel then I? You may be able to call the fuel pumping, refining, shipping and distributing system an oligopoly, but that still doesn’t account for why you should pay higher fuel prices then I am.
Examining this from a rational point of view, there must be some difference in the localities in which we live. In about 5 minutes of investigating, I turned up this little gem (http://web.syr.edu/~jvstirli/files/Breakdown%20of%20New%20York%20State%20Gasoline%20Tax%20Rates.pdf):
New York State has the highest gasoline taxes in the nation at approximately 62.9 cents per gallon, including both state and federal taxes. That’s 2.8 cents more than Hawaii’s tax burden (60.1 cents/gallon) and 2.9 cents more than California’s—the third-runner-up (60.0 cents/gallon).
Assuming you live in CA, HI, or NY; you are paying higher fuel prices then me not because of collusion; not because the free, capitalistic market has failed you – but because of government taxation.
Enjoy it! You are paying for, and thus theoretically receiving, more and better socialized services due to the fact that you pay per capita far more then I on fuel taxes, but also likely have a higher population density.
- or -
Am I way, way off in my judgment of what state you live in?
-
Okay.....how about just a region of the country?
You can probably guess. What region would most members of this board (including me) hate to live in? Think about what we value and imagine the opposite.
Why so coy, Freedom Lover?
There's crazy people on this here internet. Hopefully none of the decent hackers are interested in me.
-

The only good thing about high taxes is nice, well maintained roads.
Am I way, way off in my judgment of what state you live in?
That's for only me to know, but you are quite a smart guy. =)
-
Kalifornia uses reformulated gasoline, especially during the winter months. It costs more than the unleaded found in the rest of the CONUS.
-
Yeah, like we can't track his IP address. ;/
IP address nothing.....some of the guys here are already looking at satellite photos of you sitting in front of your computer in your Cheetos-stained underwear.... =D
-
It's down to $2.13 here. Dropped about $0.10 today. Maybe it will actually go under $2...
-
The shippers and gas station owners/corporations, of course.
 They're not the ones that enact onerous legislation or confiscatory taxes, you know. Prices depend on the market, not the supplier's greed.
Rush Limbaugh said just a day or two ago, that gas was over three dollars in Palm Beach, Florida. Or at least in the super-swanky part of it where he lives. Of course, I'm not sure he pays real close attention to gas prices.
-
"A state you or anyone else on this board wouldn't want to live in. That's all I'll say. I don't want to reveal too much about myself on the internet."
;/
Yeah, telling someone what STATE you live in is "too much."
But, maybe you're right. Based solely on your screen name, which tells us a LOT about you, I've been able to get several credit cards in your name and have distributed them to the staff here...
-
What state are you in that still has $2.20+ gas?
There are places in Northern VA that, YESTERDAY, still were charging in the vicinity of $2.60/gal or more. These stations were within 10 road miles (probably under 5 miles straightline) from multiple stations charging under $2.00/gal.
Lowest I've seen this week has been $1.93/gal, IIRC, on the way to Bailey's Crossroads/Falls Church area.
-
Come a little farther east on 29, Eric.
The Exxon at Lee Highway and Cedar Lane has regular for 1.89. It's probably a bit less right now.
The Shell at 236 and Prosperity is supposedly still in the 2.60 range for regular.
-

That's one of the one's I was thinking about; that and the 7-11 (I think) just a little further down 236 are both outrageously high compared to the rest of the region, like $0.40-0.50 over what the general run of prices seems to be. I've passed the Exxon you mention when I go visit the wife at her office for lunch sometimes, but can't remember ever even looking at the prices. May have to run up there next time I need gas, it's really not a long trip at all.
-
The Shell at 236 and Prosperity is supposedly still in the 2.60 range for regular.
Remember the days when regular gas was something entirely different?
Remember the days when the choices of gasoline at the pump were
1. Regular (then leaded)
2. Unleaded
3. Super Unleaded
Now we have
1. Regular (now Unleaded) 87 octane
2. Mid 89 octane
3. Premium 93 octane
4. Racing 100 (+) octane
If I were 30 years older, I suppose my association with the word, regular, would refer to something entirely different. =D
-
Remember the days when the choices of gasoline at the pump were......
- Regular (leaded) @ 30 Cents per
- Ethyl or High Test
FWIW Last fill up on Thursday, Jerry (owns the filling station) was clicking back the $$ on the pump to 1.78.
I thought of youse guyses and this thread.
That's right, the OWNER of the station goes out to the pump with a key, and adjusts a gear regulator to set the price.
He also fixes flats while you wait.
I like living in the past.
-
Most of SoCal is still above $2. It's about $2.40 where I live ($2.70 for diesel). But Santa Barbara County has always had some of the highest prices in the state. Mostly due to taxes, but I can't help but think oil companies are charging us more (deservedly) because this is where the "Get Oil Out" (GOO) campaign started and the county makes it extremely difficult for oil companies to do business here.

I remember those days......vaguely.
But I remember such things as checks of....and free air and water, nobody pumped their own gas, the windshield washed, headlights polished, and S&H stamps.
-
Well, one could always move to Oregon, where if I understand correctly, you cannot pump your own gas...
-
Last time I checked, Oregon and New Jersey are the only remaining states where you cannot pump your own gas.
-

That would bug the hell out of me. Not really sure why, either.
Gas is running $1.95 - $2.00 out here.

$1.65 to $1.72 in the Lexington, KY area.
I remember those days......vaguely.
Growing up in little Macedonia, IA with it's one tiny gas station, I remember gas pumps with the rotating dials showing the price and gallons pumped. They had a vending machine that had pop in glass too.
-
$1.98-2.29 here in Idaho (the 2.29 being an oddball chevron that is always high & devoid of customers)
Diesel is at 2.65 still.

Just hit 1.93 last night.

You can still find a few mom and pop gas stations in rural iowa that still have old style pumps. I haven't see a glass bottle soda machine since 1996.
-
I haven't see a glass bottle soda machine since 1996.
I was about 9 or 10 years old. I remember trying to get a dollar from my parents, jumping on my bike and riding up to the gas station to buy a pop and a candy bar. Good times. =)
-
make that $1.93 for gas now.
-
Got gas today for 1.44, in Pacific, MO. That's about an hour west of St. Louis, on I-44.
'Course, the last time I bragged about getting cheap gas there, a certain individual told me it had something to do with all the crime in St. Louis.

$2.09 in Reno Nevada.

$1.89 in Madison, WI.

A can or glass bottle of Coke and a candy bar out of the vending machine, both for 25 cents apiece.
Of course, that was circa 1970-75.

-
That would bug the hell out of me. Not really sure why, either.
It bugs me (I grew up in Nevada and moved to Oregon to go to college), and I know exactly why. It's because I have to wait for the freaking attendants, which might take a while if the place is busy, as most places only have one or two on duty.
You might wait for 5 minutes before one of them gets around to asking you whether or not you want a fill up, and you might wait another 5 or 10 more until they notice that the gas has stopped pumping and come and take the nozzle out and give you your receipt.
It doesn't bug me as much as it used to, though, now that I've been here for 4 1/2 years or so.
Edit: Also, there's the assumption that you are too stupid to safely pump your own gas. The legislation that made it illegal to pump your own gas was passed on the grounds that it was a safety issue and letting the proles pump their own gas could cause a safety hazard, though the real reason was to inflate employment. That bugs me almost as much as waiting.
-
Just hit 1.89. Sometimes the price will drop again just a few hours after the last drop.
-
Friday night here in Tulsa I filled up at $1.63 on the way out for a hockey game. On the way home I had noticed it dropped to $1.61 and then Saturday morning it was down to $1.59.
Last weekend I filled up in Independence, MO for $1.59 or so and I saw on the news the other day it was down to about $1.43 at the same place.
-
$1.57 today. Filled the truck up in anticipation of going fishing tomorrow. Found two flat tires on the boat's trailer when I got to the storage lot. Going to spend tomorrow getting those fixed.

Title changed to reflect new price.

Filled up with $1.69 per gallon fuel.
Cost me $21.36 to full up from 1/4 tank. If the trend continues next week fillups will be under $20 bucks. I thought I would never have a fill up under $40 ever again.

At these prices we might be able to finance a Sugar Mama APS pirate hunting expedition.....
When I checked on the boat yesterday she had 3/4 tank of gas, so she needs 31 gallons to fill up. So that's about $60 for premimum. Never thought I'd see that!
-
I paid $1.64 in Marion Illinois on my way back from deer camp yesterday.....

You're right and right.
23' long, 8.5' beam. Cruise around 30mph, max around 40mph. 125 gallons of gas nets a max range without reserve of about 240 miles.

Gasoline first hits $1.50/gallon in Whiteland, IN.
-
It only cost me $15.17 to fill up my Corolla yesterday. I remember it costing close to $35, what seems like just a few weeks ago.
-
I paid $1.89 at the Woodinville Costco a few days back, the first time I've seen <$2/gal since I moved to WA.
-
Still in the high 2.00s here. Think it was $2.73 this morning.

1.73 here.
I do wonder IF it gets under a buck a gallon say down to around a just a bit more than the total of the gas taxes if that might cause people to politically rebel against the taxes in order to push gas prices even lower.
-
Filled up my Tacoma for the first time in almost a month (VERY little driving due to odd circumstances) and it was $32.00. Just under nineteen gallons. =D
$1.71/gal.
-
Still 1.99 a gallon here in Lewistown, Pennsylvania.
-
We're slowly getting there. $1.85 out on I-5 yesterday at the ARCO. Cheapest around, even for being on the interstate.
-
$1.79 in Token Creek, WI.
I'd wager it's probably the same in Madison, too.
-
Central Pennsylvania seems to have stalled completely on gas prices.
-
Title altered to reflect current lowest gasoline price in Franklin, IN.
-
Title changed to reflect lowest price in Indianapolis area (Whiteland).
-
$1.69 now out on I-5 at the ARCO. Still the cheapest around, even for being on the interstate. I should add, it's always been that way. Kind of weird for a station in the highway.
Are the prices still stalled out your way in Central PA, Mike?
-
$1.46 in Denver now.... how low will it go?
-
I'm back in Virginia now, but looking at Gasbuddy.com it seems as if the prices in Central PA are ticking down ever so slowly.
When I left the price in Lewistown was $1.95.
I think I paid $1.83 at a Sheetz just off the PA Turnpike near Dillsburg, but it may have been a bit more.
Right now it looks like the price in Lewistown is around $1.85.
-
Prices have been very odd here in North Saint Louis County, this past week.
Prices keep fluctuating between 1.45 and 1.69 Some stations that are usually low are high. Some that usually high, are low.

I wonder if the state of the economy along with the current downward pressure on gas prices, has distorted the usual practice of stations increasing prices during holidays? This is around the holidays where a lot of people tend to hit the road, drive to Grandma's. Some stations are raising prices per usual, some aren't, some are conflicted.
-
I suppose Bombay has something to do with it, too. I mean the terrorist attack in India, but I don't know how to spell the city's shiny new (old) name. :)
I should probably get all miffed, and fabricate a conspiracy theory, to make myself feel better about it all.
But surr-iously, I can't relate to these people that get suspicious about different stations having different prices. I guess it's because I've been living too close to the city for too long. The station right down the street from me is always ten to fifteen cents higher than the other stations in my hood. I presume that is because it is right where people are coming out of the terminal at Lambert Airport, and it is surrounded by rental car lots, long-term parking lots, and hotels. I've noticed that the gas is usually a little cheaper near U of MO, St. Louis, and in the neighborhood where my wife used to live. Both are a little east of me (closer to the city). It's always more expensive at a certain spot I used to go, further east. Then if I go an hour to the west, by my parents' place, it's sometimes ten cents cheaper; sometimes not.

Gas is now officially cheaper than when I moved to Oregon 4 years ago.
-
Title changed to reflect lowest price.
-
Price drops another 2 cents....title changed.
-
Price drops another 2 cents......Now paying the same costs for a gallon of unleaded when I first started to drive in 1982.
-
Wow...
When I started driving in 1981, I remember paying 85 cents a gallon.
It didn't really go over $1 a gallon consistently until the Exxon Valdez went aground in 1989.
-
We can't seem to get below $1.50 in Ames,IA (currently $1.54)
30 miles away its $1.43 in Des Moines.
-

I remember the 1980's as pretty much 1.14-1.17 where I grew up (SE Iowa), except for 1988 where is was under a buck. Shot up to $1.40 with the invasion of Kuwait/Gulf War I then settled back down to $1.14-1.20, then under a buck again in 1997.
-
Pennsylvania, at the time I was there, seemed to have pretty low gas prices.
I do remember Iraq invading Kuwait, and the effect it had on gas prices...
I was moving from Lewistown, PA, to Washington, DC, that exact week.
Every time I passed gas stations both in Lewistown and in DC, the price had gone up.
-
Here in Tulsa it is $1.41 and up.
Going to Amarillo this weekend. Hope it drops another few cents between now and Friday.
-
How far will it drop?
-
We may have seen the last of dips in the price of a gallon for awhile.
Oil is pushing back up hard right now in anticipation of OPEC's meeting next week. Plus, the dollar is weakening, making oil more attractive.
-
Down to $1.38 in Tulsa.

Hmmm... the future is such a fickle thing...
-
Yesterday, gas was around $1.50. This morning it is listed at $1.75. What gives? Maybe just weekend gouging for the snowmobilers headed north?

I drove home last night from the monthly meeting at the gun club and I noticed that fuel was $1.49 a gallon. I don't drive past any filling stations on my way to work so I don't know if it raised overnight or not.
-
Oil prices are up some 20% recently, from roughly $40/barrel to $48/barrel. That may or may not have something to do with the slight bump in gas prices lately.

Bump? It went from 1.31 to $1.77.
-
Bump? It went from 1.31 to $1.77.
Eh. It went from $1.65 to $1.77 here. Seemed like a bump to me.
-
Prices here in Chicago range from $1.49 to $1.79.
-
$1.32 here in Denver, stayed the same over the past three days now. No one wants to drop it any more, it seems - prices are lower than what my folks saw back in the early 1980s!
-
We're still stuck in the 1.60s here in Fairfax, Virginia, but there are a couple of places that have crept into the 150s.
-
$ 1.73 to 1.85 per gallon of unleaded regular in this area 25 miles north of Seattle.
-

$1.40's down here in the hood.
Went to Deltaville yesterday, it was $1.55 the entire way.
Put 30 gallons of prem. in the boat for less than $60.....
-
After a week of no movement at around 1.65 prices at some stations have now moved to sub 1.60 with ARCO dropping twice in one day down to 1.55.
-
Wife's got an Esssuuuvveee....one of the ones that would give Al Gore a cornoary if he knew the carbon footprint it leaves behind.....
Fed it Premimum at $1.69, they were selling regular at $1.39. Cheapest fill up ever for that beast.
-
$1.65 out at the I-5 Arco. Just a .04 drop in the last week. It appears to be slowing.
-
Yup.
It is taking awhile for the others to migrate down to the ARCO's price.
Safeway is usually a penny more than ARCO but they are still +9 cents as of this evening.
For a while one 76 was the low price leader when it usually is one of the more exspensive places. At one point it was 15 cents under the average, but the owners don't seem to want to keep that going. Too bad.

The problem with Al Gore's coronary, is that his personal fleet of transportation, as well as his own home, leaves greater carbon footprints than the average person's lifestyle.
Al Gore view of the American way: Democracy Hypocrisy in action.

Are you PNW, Warren? Whereabouts?
-
NorCal, a little berg named Chico.
-
Went from $1.38 Sunday to $1.49 Monday here in Tulsa.

Its acceptable if you're in the elite ruling class spreading the gospel. If you're a prole, you're not allowed to have a carbon footprint.
-
1.51 in fredericksburg
-
$1.69 Ames, IA
I guess I shouldn't run out and buy that 12 ton 8x8 SUV now.
-
The ARCO went up .02 overnight. I'm thinking there will be no more price drops until after Holiday.
-
Went from $1.44 to $1.58
-
Arco went up .04 in two .02 steps today.
-
The local gas stations went up 3-4 cents over the past day. I am now seeing $ 1.77-1.85. I wonder if things have bottomed out, although I note that the oil price per barrel is continuing to drop.
-
1. Christmas traveling
2. Increased demand for gasoline
3. Scary conspiracy
4. Profit!!
-
Oil prices slipped again today, down another 9 percent.
US stocks of distillates skyrocketed, but crude stocks plunged 3.1 million barrels because of imports being off.
Gas prices here in Lewistown are either 1.59 or 1.65 for unleaded, depending on which station you go to.
They jump 10 to 20 cents a gallon 30 miles northwest in State College.
Because of the ice I haven't been out today, but I'm going out probably this evening.
-
on 610 in north stafford 3 valeros from 1.41 to 1.67
-
$2.49 today
-
Locally to me I'm seeing it for anywhere from 2.47 a gallon to 2.59 for unleaded.
-
$2.49 today
Hmm... the last prices listed were the middle of winter. (Low prices)
Currently we're at the height of summer. (High prices)
Hmmmm.... I'm sure there's some sort of connection there... ;/
-
About $2.50 in Dallas.
-
It hit $2.87 out at the highway this week. Albany, OR.

CONSPIRACY!!

CONSPIRACY!!
Nah, just a bunch of idiot speculators driving the price of oil up. It's all out of whack with the whole supply/demand thing, and sooner or later the bubble will burst again.
-
Around here diesel dropped down and has stayed below unleaded for around the last six months. Around $2.75 versus $3.30 for unleaded.
-

Sometimes I truly think that, especially when you hear about all those big new oil finds in the last couple years.

Filled up the bike this morning for $2.42/gal for the cheap stuff in Fredericksburg VA.

Why? Worldwide demand is way down, ~6.8% the last time I saw a number, except for perhaps in China, but there is evidence that a lot of that is stockpiling and not for consumption.
Our supplies in storage are at record highs, with the largest facility at Cushing, OK almost absolutely full.
There are many super tankers just plodding around the oceans as mobile storage tanks, waiting for prices to rise further.
Granted the value of the dollar drives some of the price variation as that is how oil is priced, and oil has been following equities lately, too, but of late there has been a disconnect between supply/demand and oil prices.
-

If they're buying it for stockpiling, they're still buying it. Demanding it, even.

I'm not sure what this means. Either they expect prices to rise, so they're holding out; or they don't think current prices will cover their overhead. Either way, it's their oil. Can't they do with it whatever they want?
-

This doesn't even take into account those speculators that do not take physical possession of the commodity they speculate in. No actual product need be pumped out of the ground.
It depends on the form of speculation.

Yep, it's their's and they sure can do with it as they please.
I guess my whole point is that currently the oil futures market is not being much influenced by the normal supply/demand dynamic. The speculation is being driven by other factors that are more difficult to measure.
-
OK

The futures market is NEVER driven by the "normal" supply/demand dynamic. It doesn't matter what supply and demand are right now for the futures market, it matters what they expect the price (by virtue of the future supply/demand dynamic) to be in the future.
IF the futures market is bidding up the price, it is because they expect the price to rise in the future. If someone expects the price to fall, now is the time to sell. If no one is selling, no one thinks the price is going down.

All very true, makattak. I should have been more expansive in what I was saying.
In my opinion, most speculators are extrapolating from poor current data, and making bad guesses as to what the future holds with regard to oil consumption. Every little bit of data that even slightly appears to point to an improving economy is seized upon as a justification for forecasting increasing oil consumption over the coming months. Many pundits are claiming the recession is already over, that it was a quick 'V' shaped recession, and hence oil demand in the developed and developing nations will increase soon. And of course, the commodities players are betting on higher oil prices. There seems to be more than a little pack or mob mentality at work right now amongst the speculators.
Other indicators point to it being more of the 'bathtub' type recession, and that we have another year or three to go before it finally ends. Many economic prognosticators believe we are in for another serious downturn in the markets, starting in Sept/Oct this year. There some serious concerns about commercial real estate loans that have yet to play out. Some of China's methodology for totaling its economic activity is highly suspect to some, leading to concerns that their economic growth numbers are seriously inflated.
In any event, time will tell whether or not the oil futures market is heading for a bubble. We should know in the next couple of months.
