Looks like cell services are down across the country this morning, depending on your provider. Made sure to establish comms with my family for awareness.
Question is, is this a dry run or technology issue? Will find out soon enough but it definitely reminded me to go over our comm out procedures and remind the girls on what to do/ how to respond if it’s a drawn out problem.
-
I mean, Occom's Razor puts it at a technical glitch, but I admit that when I put on my tinfoil as I read about it, I was thinking that it happening at zero dark thirty for most of the country would be a good timeframe for a government testing its ability to shut down civilian comms. =)

My Verizon service has been okay. I heard someone comment about AT&T.

Looks like AT&T is the locus. Just ran across mention of solar activity as the culprit. Anyone see info to support that?

I just checked and our Verizon signals are up and running. The Net tells me AT&T is having issues.

Seems like if it was space weather, it would have hit others besides AT&T, as well as other tech.
-
This is what happens when you let fascists kill the net neutrality.
-
We're impacted by this outage in Hickory, NC. We have Consumer Cellular, and their service piggybacks on AT&T from what I know. Can't make outgoing calls on the cell network at this point. It should work with WiFi calling, but I haven't tested it as yet.

Flare warning and a pair of X-Ray spikes last night but not sure if it was strong enough to cause this. The ejecta is forecasted to have a possible glancing effect the 25th

I won't call this one enemy action yet.
It's far more likely this is some intersection of buggy equipment, a natural event, and generally crumbling infrastructure.

I'm betting someone screwed up a system software update.

I'm still thinking not space weather, as I haven't heard anything about GPS or comms sats being affected. If there's anything out there about that, a solar event would be a likely source. GPS is generally more sensitive to it than earth based cell towers.
-
I would be worried it is a prelude to invasion but we have been getting invaded for over three years.
-
Cell service is back up in my neck of the woods. Not sure when it came back online. The tire shop was able to call me earlier when my Yeep was ready.

I was okay, but a guy I sent a text message to early in the morning called me about 1 PM to ask me about it.

I've got Tracfone and have had no issues. Maybe it's aliens who are taking down our communications alphabetically . . .

I was talking to an AT&T tech a few days ago who was out to fix my POTS service. He said in about 2 years AT&T will be discontinuing traditional landline telephone service entirely - EVERYTHING will be either VOIP or cell. They're already curtailing service and maintenance, but doing so very quietly.

Certain that's not real but I'm sure if some out there believe it may cause some panic [popcorn]

Ours came back up around 1300 EST yesterday. Will be interesting to see if we ever get an accurate description on what really caused the comms out.

That's going to lead to some hefty fines for knocking 911 service out of commission.

We switched from an AT&T landline last year when Spectrum fiber finally became available. I was paying AT&T $120 a month for one number, Spectrum is costing $20.00 per month. AT&T keeps sending us ads for landline service, at $45/mo. plus fees & taxes.
I've toyed with the idea of going back to AT&T, but after what you said - nope.
-
Does anyone have a VOIP land line phone?
How does that work?
-
I kind of have one:
I have Google Voice and use an Obi200 VOIP box to connect a two line Panasonic speakerphone. One line connects to my cell, and the other line connects to the Google Voice as a VOIP phone. The sound quality is great, but I increasingly like to use the Microsoft Teams software phone instead. It has closed captioning for calls, which is great help with my hearing loss.

They left out
A bunch of white guys came running in screaming this MAGA country! and crashed the system.
And on that note I'm surprised I haven't seen "effected POC the most" yet.
-

Chances are you have one already. A lot of POTS service has been quietly converted to digital with either in-house NUC nodes or A/D converters in the landing boxes.
New VOIP service is probably going to be either a phone assembly with some kind of internal IP compatibility (literally a phone-shaped standalone mini computer) or some kind of VOIP interface box that plugs into to your home network and has a standard phone jack for use with existing phones. Sometimes they'll be st up to backfeed existing houuse jacks for whole-home compatibility..
Brad

Actually, I don't.
When I dropped FIOS a couple of months ago I also dropped the landline phone and kept only internet access.

^Just for a little extra color on the red button concept.
All I know right now is I'm keeping my 2 meter rigs charged for any more of "the net's down" events, red button or botón rojo or whatever.
Hell, I might even resurrect one of my old CB rigs except they use a bigger antenna.
