A wolf tried to drag a New Jersey man out of his tent that he occupied with his wife and two young sons in the middle of the night in Banff.

It was like something out of a horror movie. Matt literally threw his body in front of me and the boys, and fought the Wolf as it ripped apart our tent and his arms and hands. We were screaming for help as he was fighting it and trying to save us, for what felt like an eternity (but I think was anyw...

I am not sure I can truly imagine waking up to a big wolf in my tent or bedroom.  That has to be pretty scary.  I guess it is a good reason to keep a knife or pistol handy (light also).

It also makes me wonder if they had something in the tent the wolf smelled other than them.

Prey animals shouldn't be allowed to camp in gun-free forest areas like parks and monuments and preserves and primitive areas without carrying protection for themselves.

Just about every critter on earth carries some kind of self-defense equipment around with them.

Hell, even kittens carry concealed defense devices.

Actually, that close-up, a 4 or 5 inch knife or a tomahawk-like implement might be better.

Humans do have a natural defense, our brains.  However, you have to use it for it to be effective.

Interestingly, I've seen a few, "no wolves, no way" signs around here, actually just a few miles over the border from me into Eastern Oregon. I'm not sure if Oregon is looking at distributing them into the area or what. It would be easy enough for them to find their way across the Snake and visit my neck of the woods though. The closest documented wolf population right now appears to be Northeast of Boise.

Caliber isn't important, but the brand is.

I remember reading about wolf sightings in Eastern Oregon back in 2004. According to ODFW there's currently several areas in Eastern and Southwestern Oregon with known populations:

Yeah, the wolf population all over the western US is increasing.  And, in shocking news, the wolf behaviors that pissed off humans 150 years ago was not mitigated by adding more humans to the area.

I love wolves, but adding more apex predators is going to lead to conflict.

They just finished whacking 4 members of a 5 wolf pack up north of here because they like eating beef. I don't blame them, "Beef. It's What's for Dinner". There will be new wolves in there pretty soon and they will develop a taste for beef and it will be a wash, rinse, repeat as needed.

On another note, according to the Idaho Fish and Game or someone like that they reason the elk population has decreased in Idaho is because of depredation by cougars. Yea, I believe that, cats have been here forever and there were plenty of elk, wolves started moving in and elk population decreased but it's the cats now doing it because they know the blame will fall on the wolves. ;)

In my callow youth --I was only 73 at the time --I made the suggestion that introducing wolves into an area was disturbing the natural balance of nature, where humans were the top predator and which cultivated their own prey.

I was roundly and soundly castigated for introducing that concept.  I stopped being so realistic with certain segments of our society after that.
