It turns out he was likely intoxicated for much of the time while working as a pathologist.  Apparently being drunk does not improve your ability to interpret the biopsies.  Also of interest, he chose an intoxicant that I have never heard of and is undetectable by the typical toxicology tests: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tert-Amyl_alcohol

As a veteran who goes to the VA for much of my health care, I both did and didn't need to know about this case.
