National Humane Society ??
« on: September 07, 2005, 06:20:11 AM »
We all should know about the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), but what about the National Humane Society.  Are they similar in mind set as HSUS ??  The reason I ask is that my kid brought home a donation form from school, with the donations going towards pets/owners in the Gulf Coast.
"Belief" is the acceptance of a hypothesis in the absence of data.
"Prejudice" is having an opinion not supported by the preponderance of the data.
"Knowledge" is only found through the accumulation and analysis of data.
The plural of anecdote is not "data"

Erik,

Please take this as information only, not an endorsement of any of these people or groups.  This is just passing along some stuff I've found or been sent.

Their web site is http://www.nationalhumane.com/   I have *no* knowledge of them - never heard of them before.

The Houston SPCA (not affilitated with HSUS as far as I know) is at:
http://www.spcahouston.org/spcahouston/default.asp

They are caring for a lot of animals evacuated from the storm.

From a usually reliable source:
>The hotline for people to call to inform the LA SPCA of the last known
>location of their animals left/confined in New Orleans is 225-578-6111.
>Or they can email their info to katrinaanimalrescue@yahoo.com.  Please
>disseminate this information as appropriate.

From another reliable source:
"The funds from ARF-KAT are going directly to animal rescue groups on the
ground in the disaster area. Homeless Cat Network is encouraging people
to donate money for the animal relief effort, which can be done on their
website, www.HomelessCatNetwork.org
, or by sending a check to Homeless
Cat Network at P.O. Box 6, San Carlos, CA 94070. (Please make checks
payable to Homeless Cat Network, and write ?for ARF-KAT? in the memo
section.)" - Note that ARF is an acronym for Animal Relief Fund

Phone numbers:

Northwest Louisiana Humane Soc. Nancy 318-219-7387504-366-8972

Best of luck.

I'm always leery of any charity with "National" in the name, especially if it is based in washington DC.  It could just be a lobbying group or a PR group and probably doesn't do much besides raise funds.  I give to about 30 different animal charities (including the local and state humane societies).  I don't give to any washington based groups.
