Any recommendations on a nice mild cigar? Nothing super fancy, but also nothing equivalent to a burning tire.
-
You can't go wrong with most Macanudo cigars. They tend to be very mild, and available almost anywhere. That's what I recommend for anyone interested in starting in with cigars.

Go to a good cigar shop in your area and ask the guys there to pick out a couple for you. Can't go wrong. Don't give more than about $8 for a cigar. You shouldn't have too. I have found that most of the Arturo Fuente brands are mild enough, rather inexpensive, and taste great. My personal favorite, however, are CAO Criollos, particularly the Conquistador torpedo.

I second the Macinudo suggestion. I'm a new cigar smoker, and I've had good luck with ~$4 cigars.

The aforementioned Macanudos are very mild and aromatic. Also check out Canaria D'oro, Partagas, Big Butt (if you can find them, don't let the name throw you) and H. Upmann. Oh, and if you are just starting out, if anyone should offer you a true Cuban, as politely as possible, decline. I have smoked primos for 15 years and a Cuban will still put me on my butt.

Thanks, everyone.

Upmann, Punch, Romeo Y Julieta, Macanudo, Montecristo.
-
For mild, I like the Hoyo De Monterey Excaliburs and Punch.
-
Don't get turned off by the dark maduro wrappers either. Not necessarily harsh, very flavorful.
Fuente Double Chateau.
-
I second the Hoyo De Monterreys
I also like La Unica and La Gloria Cubana - especially the torpedos.
-
In your case, yes, the Macanudos are probably a perfect choice.

I can't wait till the weather gets warm again so I can enjoy cigars again.
My next house will have a Gun Room/Home Office in which I will be able to reload, store guns, and smoke cigars (not while reloading, doh!)

I have found that most of the Arturo Fuente brands... rather inexpensive
I guess you haven't picked the habit of their Opus X Fuentes yet, then.
-
Lessee... in my Tupperdor are:
· One La Gloria Cubana torpedo
Oh, well, I'm more into pipes anyway.
But you couldn't go too far wrong with a Fuente 8-5-8.

Hmmm... time to inventory the cigar collection, not including the ruined stuff in my antique, pretty, but largely useless humidor:
In tupperware are..
3 Dos Hombres
1 La Gianna Havana
3 Cusano Cuban
1 Abuelo
1 cohiba
1 romeo y julieta
1 la gloria cubana
1 macanudo
Some were gifts. The ruined ones are almost all cubans, sadly.

Baccarat Rothschilds are mild but have a really nice flavor.
-
Always was a big fan of the CAO's. Macanudos as well.
-
CAOs are good. I also had one that I am pretty sure was called a Pedron... very nice.
I am new to cigars, though.

Lots of good suggestions above. After you've tried a bunch of those suggested and have an idea of what you like, try J.R. Cigar's [www.jrcigars.com] knock-offs of the same brand/size & shape. Many are supposedly 'seconds' from the original source factory (not that it's noticable), and at a considerable savings. I've been happy with their knock-off Fuentes, Upmann's, and Royal Jamaicans. At the minimum JR has good prices on line, and everything I've ever bought from them has been good and 'fresh'. Enjoy.

Well, thanks to this thread I just finished an enjoyable evening at my local cigar bar. I'ts a *very* small place a couple miles away with a bar that seats maybe 4 people, and a walk in humidor,
I renewed my aquaintance with a couple of old favorites- a Macanudo and a La Gloria Cubana, both Churchill size.
The macanudo was very nice, spicier than I had remembered, and the La Gloria Cubana was a lot milder than I recalled, but still a very nice taste. They used to have a great, earthy tobacco flavor, now it's sort of less so, but still good. Went well with a couple of Guinesses.
Thanks APS!

Try a Rocky Patel--Vintage 12 years. They are a very consistant cigar right down to the band and very smooth. Others are sure to disagree with this but I found the about 1 out 3 Macs just get very nasty at the end (last 1/3 of the cigar) and it ruins the whole experience for me. The Baccarats, to me at least, are just rough and hard to enjoy. They make the back of my throat hurt.
When you get used to Vintages you can upgrade to Patel's Edge brand.

I'm not a smoker myself, but Don Diegos seem to go over well at JR Cigars. They supposedly have a very light but still flavorful taste.
