Sherlock Holmes Movie/Video
« on: February 02, 2009, 03:01:26 PM »
I am re-reading the Sherlock Holmes mysteries after a 10 year interval.

I was wondering if there were any good movies/Tv series of them?

IMO, the Jeremy Brett adaptation is the best, bar none, and the most extensive. It is widely available on DVD. My wife has the complete collection on VHS.

THE quintessential Sherlock Holmes was Basil Rathbone . . . the actor made a series of films in the 1930s and 1940s where he played the famous detective. The first few were "period" pieces, set in Conan Doyle's England, but later movies were updated. They often crop up on cable, usually late at night; I'm not sure whether they're out on DVD.

Second that. Brett was marvelous and the production was true to the written tales.

HankB:

Good luck finding a bigger fan of Basil Rathbone than yours truly. There is NO other Guy of Gisborne. But, his performance is about the only redeeming trait of those SH films, especially the later "SH vs. Nazis" abominations.

Jeremy Brett all but owns that character henceforth.

Yes, it has been ten years, but I don't recall any SH vs Nazi action.

I may exaggerate re: Nazis, but there was a big foreign agent vibe, certainly colored by the war.

I'll throw my hat into the ring for Jeremy Brett, although I've only seen The Great Mouse Detective's version of Basil Rathbone.

The Jeremy Brett version has the most unforgettable theme music of all time, and the most fitting.

Also check dollar stores and the checkout lines at WalMart for these on $1 DVDs.

I recalled the Nazi thing too. Found this, which I remember well from TV..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes_and_the_Voice_of_Terror
