Youtube problems with IE 9. Solution found.
« on: July 06, 2011, 02:38:12 PM »
Little info for those who've started having problems playing YouTube vids on IE 9.

I'm running Win 7 Home 64-bit and recently upgraded to IE9.  After the latest round of security updates I found I couldn't play a YouTube vid.  The page would load but the screen would remain black with no activity.

Solution...

In Internet Options go to Security.  Select "Trusted Sites".  Add YouTube to the list.  Note that you will have to uncheck the "Require server verification (https:)" to properly enter the url (enter it as an http:/ address and not an https:/ address).

*scratches head*

Did it do it to all videos?  I wonder if YouTube has started shoving HTML5 video stuff down to IE9.

I need to play with that stuff again.  I tried it in Chrome for a while but it seemed to work a little goofy.

No video would work.  The screen would load, but after displaying the the youtube player box, nothing.  The vid never loaded.

Starting yesterday (July 5) I can't view any Youtube vids in Firefox 3.x.xx. I wonder if the same thing will work for me.

What changed? Youtube must have done something, because I didn't make any changes to anything on my system over the 4th of July weekend.

...

No joy. I can't find anything/anywhere in Firefox to tell it to trust Youtube.com. I get a black window where the video should be, and the status bar at the bottom of my screen keeps saying it's transferring data from somewhere ... but nothing's happening.

Won't play in IE8, either.

I suspect Google is trying to force us to use Chrome.

Hopped on Icanhazcheezburger and none of their embedded videos are playing, either.  Maybe someone can find a system-wide solution for the problem rather than having to list each site you want to see as "trusted" in the security field.

See above. Chrome isn't working either. The whole YouTube page loads, all the comments, everything, but the video window just remains black, no controls, no hour glass, nothing...  ???

Yep. That's exactly what I'm seeing in both Firefox and IE.

Adding youtube.com to trusted sites didn't fix it in IE8

Same thing happened to me.  Unchecking the "require server verification" field and entering the url as an http:/ address rather than an https:/ did the trick.

It obviously has something to do with security and the embedded flash vids, not any particular browser.  I don't have the time or patience to delve into it today.  Maybe someone with more 3l33t savvy can come up with a fix.

Not for me. I saw your earlier post and I did that. No joy.

Whatever is going on, it's affecting all browsers, not just IE, so it's must be something at the Google/Youtube end.

Apparently it's bigger than than just Google/Youtube.  Embedded vids on other sites aren't working for me, either.

Brad

Been exploring, and see the same results too. Some sites work, others don't.

I wonder if some sort of Shockwave/Flash problem with Adobe is at the root of this.  Can anyone say if there's some sort of central technology where flash connects to Adobe or some other central place when playing various website's videos?  ???

I mean Fox 5 with Win 7 is working just fine, for watching YouTube. I haven't had any problems to fix.

Yes, using Firefox 5, Win7x64, at about 1400PDT.  Seamlessly.

I had been noticing problems with embedded youtube videos lately with IE9 also.     I would click an embedded video and the progress bar would move, and I would hear the sound of the video (if it had any) but no video.   I learned that clicking on the 'full screen' button would make the video appear.   I of course then had to hit 'esc' to go back to normal size, but this has been my workaround for a few days now.

I'll try the 'trusted sites' thing when I get home.   I'm @ work now, on XP w/ IE7  :-(
