Lava soap
« on: July 31, 2012, 12:03:11 AM »
Ok.  So, I am a bachelor, and I like to work with machine tools and on cars.  This means that I get all kinds of greasy/dirty often.  After trying several different cleaner products (goop, gojo, fast orange), I found that the $1 Lava soap from walmart works outstandingly well.  It's abrasive and bonds to grease very well.  So, I keep that around.

The other day, I ran out of Dove soap for the shower.  Being a bachelor and unwilling to go out to buy stupid soap, I just used the shampoo.

Well, tonight I ran out of shampoo.  So I used the Lava soap.

Holy cow, I haven't felt this squeeky clean in years.  Question: If I keep doing this, will I abrade all the skin off my body?

Only if you insist on showering everyday.

Lava soap and private parts. Just seems that the two were never supposed to meet.

Nick, try wearing nitrile gloves while working on the greasy stuff. Keeps your hands clean. You can get them cheap at Wal-Mart in the pharmacy area. As a bonus, the soap and shampoo aisle is nearby.

Or, you can use lotion on your hands before you start working with the greasy stuff. That helps the grease and dirt wash off easier.

Yeah, you might soap yourself raw after repeated uses.

Back when I did manual labor, I would sometimes use Ajax or Comet to get pine sap off my skin or out of my hair.

Having had my mouth washed out with Lava Soap as a kid, I do NOT recommend it as a replacement should you run out of toothpaste!
I might not last very long or be very effective but I'll be a real pain in the ass for a minute!

I used it every day this summer for about two weeks straight on my arms and legs in the shower with no adverse effects.

I don't think today's Lava contains as much pumice as it did when I was a kid. When my hands are real grimy, I use Boraxo powdered hand soap.

(Yes, I have used Comet.)

Dawn dish soap and a palm full of comet will wash off just about anything that needs washing off.
