We have been diminished.  RIP.

I was living in Army housing in Germany during the Friendship 7 mission so I was unable to watch (no TV).

Although I don't remember the event his cross-America speed record always impressed me. He went from NAS Los Alamitos, CA to Floyd Bennett Field in NY in 3 hours and 23 minutes. That time was done with 3 separate in-flight refueling where the speed dropped to below 300 knots. It was done in a Vought F8U-1P (photo recon version) Crusader. That flight also recorded the first continuous panoramic photo of the US. It was the first cross country flight that averaged better than Mach 1.

I didn't realize that he was a WW2 Vet, he flew the F4U in the South Pacific.

RIP Colonel Glenn

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee, Jr
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

RIP. I remember watching the 1st moon landing and building the L.E.M. (Lunar Excursion Module) and Apollo Capsule model as a kid.

I probably did but I am not 100% sure but I just can't see me or my dad missing it.
