Ted Stevens lost in Alaska...
« on: November 18, 2008, 09:58:59 PM »
Not good.

I think the Dems are one seat away from a filibuster proof 60 seat majority, and there are what, two or three seats that are still being contested and recounted?

So, it's likely not a question of whether an AWB comes during the first term, but whether it comes during the first 100 days.

Wonderful.

Georgia's runoff is on Dec 2.

That is the last stand. If enough Republicans do not turn out, it will be ram through socialism, ram through AWB, ram through raised taxes, ram through everything, gavel after gavel after gavel, with Obama signing every single one.

And you know how some of the Democrats are talking about "fixing" the housing crisis now?

Making low-interest loans more widely available to people with less than perfect credit, to get people into the market for all the houses sitting in inventories.

I want to scream out the window and throw stuff.

They don't have 60 Dem. votes on guns.  This is an ALASKAN Democrat.

There are a few other "A"-rated Dems in the Senate.

There are two good things about Senator Stevens losing in Alaska.

One, the winner is pretty much pro-gun.

Two, Senator Stevens needs to go to jail, it seems.

I'm not sure where Senator Elect Begich stands on other issues important to me; taxation, the welfare state, socialized everything, abortion and the relative size of government.  With any luck he'll be conservative enough not to go along with all the wild-eyed schemes possible and feared from an Obama Administration.

We've still got Chambliss and Coleman going... send money folks.  Think of how much you'll be able to save if you can't spend it on guns and ammunition.
As long as the citizens of the United States own and keep personal weapons, we can argue about all the other issues that concern us.  The instant we lose the ability to keep weapons, our masters will decide all those other issues for us.

Stevens was convicted by a jury not of his peers, with a prosecution chastised by the judge for failing to disclose exculpatory evidence, lying in their indictment and making a mockery of the principle of a fair trial.

At no time did anyone imply that whatever gifts were given influenced any votes, there was no "quid pro quo".

The gifts themselves were not found to be improper in and of themselves, simply not correctly disclosed.

The appeal, which the judge himself damn near called for, will show far more of the truth of the matter than the sham of a trial did.

Stevens was caught up in the general sense of "get those corrupt Republicans" and also "get those Alaskans" during the campaign.

Do you really believe the brat mayor is going to buck Harry Reid and company?

That A rating he got was because someone told him how to answer the questions for a favorable rating. He has an anti-gun idealology.

Do you remember the slapdown he got from the state when he tried to pull the homerule card in violation of preemption when we went to permitless carry?

At best we're going to have minimal representation in Washington now.

Hopefully he'll be an ineffective one-term wonder.

If you trust a Democrat, you're just going to get stabbed in the back or thrown under the bus.

"Pro-gun democrat" is nothing but a label of convenience at the moment. They'll turn FUDD and throw EBR owners under the bus the moment it becomes politically expedient to do so.

Problem is with the letter behind their name Harry Reid will grab them by the arm and make them do what he needs. Junior Senator is like junior military, you go along to get along. Or else. People don't grasp that, my county went 65% for McCain but 65% for Democrat senator Mark Warner. Just because he was a centrist governor that didn't do anything against guns in VA doesn't mean a thing. He will vote the party line. The NRA needs to get that too instead of saying they are not partisan. As long as the leadership of one party wants all of our guns the NRA needs to face the reality that the letter behind the name means even "pro-gun" democrats are compromised in national politics. I would like to see so many pro-gun democrats that the party leadership could not get any traction but in these next few sessions they will have all the traction they need by throwing us all under the wheels of the progress bus.

"They don't have 60 Dem. votes on guns.  This is an ALASKAN Democrat."

They don't NEED 60 Democrats. They only need a simple majority of the 100 members of the Senate to vote for any new gun laws.

You think the Republicans are going to vote en masse against any new gun laws? We've already seen that quite a few of them LOVE new anti-gun laws.

It's also very doubtful that the Republicans would mount a filibuster against any new anti-gun laws. The Republicans in 1994 had that opportunity and they failed miserably to use it.

Even if a Republican did, it's very possible that the anti-gun Republicans would vote with the Democrats to break a filibuster to get a floor vote.

Historically, the Democratic party has NEVER been in lock-step with its leadership like the Republican party.  It's a far more fractured party than the Republicans.

I also have little faith in Harry Reid as a leader of ANYTHING, unless he's been pulling punches lately.

I'm much more afraid of people like Pelosi in the house.

Is there a breakdown somewhere of the current Senate membership by NRA ratings?

Yep:
http://www.votesmart.org/issue_rating_detail.php?r_id=3492

150 D or F rated house and senate members
242 A-C rated house and senate members.  Only 10 of which were C rated.

And Gigabuist, thanks for correcting me.

More like Jim Webb, who showed his true character on gun issues by throwing his aide under the bus for a crime that Webb himself apparently committed.

The point is, not all Dems are like this. There are, or at least were, several prominent and very pro-gun Dems.

Agreed.  For instance both senators from Montana are Democrats.

I don't think things are as gloomy as some think.  I think there are fights ahead for the RKBA. But all is not lost.  But if the Dems really do go after an AWB it will be a tough road to get it passed.  And, if for some reason they do get it passed, it will be a pyrric victory.

Well, considering that, what, 5 Rpublicans just sponsored a new AWB I don't think all the "pro-gun" Democrats will save us.
