Title: This Anti-Air Conditioning Article Has it All
Post by: Ben on August 28, 2021, 10:19:21 AM
Props to Vox for hitting all the SJW talking points. AC is climate violence. AC is racist. We need "air conditioning justice". One answer is "socialized AC" where we all must got to community cooling centers.

They've got some good drugs over at Vox.

Where do these people live?

I might be interested in a minor wager on whether or not the author has AC in their home.

You can tell it's summer when another one of these articles hits.

I defy fucksticks like this to live in DC metro through one of our typical summers.

St. Louis - two major rivers, and one minor one... And 90+ temps.

And lots of black tar roofs.

Waking up to 90+ heat index last week I'm sure every old person around will dump their a/c tomorrow after reading this crap.

According to my electric bill (which is a nice playground for numbers) I used about 120 kWh in running my air conditioner during the last billing period.

I'd hate to calculate how much sweat I'd have to evaporate to get that much cooling from my body.

But just imagine all the cooling water I must have saved !

They say from their air conditioned office, in their weather tight and well insulated building.

I live without a/c, in central Virginia.

I spend most of summer struggling with meeting the basic needs in my home.

The polar bears are fine. I'm the one that's not fine.

Furthermore, it's not a racist issue.

It's a *expletive deleted*ing poverty issue.

It's just they don't recognize that poor people exist outside of black inner city communities, because they are racist *expletive deleted*s.

Sorry Liz, but it's impossible for you to be poor - you have privilege! Your privilege keeps you cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.

Perhaps we could compromise and just deny them air.

I thought about this article last evening as I turned my AC down to 70...

Mainly to clear the humidity out of the house. With all the insulation I put in a few years ago it rarely gets warmer than 75 or 76 in the living room (it may push 80 in the upstairs if it's really blistering hot).

I'm really surprised we don't see regular articles like this in the winter screaming about how home heating is killing the environment. Yeah, we see it for specific forms of heating, like coal, but I'm talking just in general.

Come on, it's not THAT cold!

aholes.

Thought I'd bring this back because here's yet another article on doing without air conditioning.

Yeah, I'll just continue to push a button, thanks, and revel in the fact that I don't live in a third world *expletive deleted*it hole.

And I love the advice to "use a swamp cooler." Doesn't work when the humidity is already beyond max as it often is here in the mid Atlantic.

Hot summer again, 2022.

Another opportunity to zing anything unthird world in our society.

Say it (in this case, regarding air conditioners) often enough and people will start to believe it.

Successive impacts.  Basic advertising / PR  technique, but we don't recognize it as such.

Yes, Swamp cooler people are always from the West where humidity is 6%.

I figure most houses these days are designed for AC at least down my way.  I think I would have mildew issues if left the AC off.  In the Winter, I run the AC periodically just to get humidity down also.

They're doing it because a lot of Southern states still tend to vote Republican. (Although the Solid South isn't as solid as it used to be.   =(  )

Our AC was out for a couple of days last week. With windows open and attic fan on high, it got to 93 in the house. We're less than a mile from the Missouri River, so I'm sure a swamp cooler would have worked just beautifully.

The one thing I've missed seeing this year are the sanctimonious posts from some of my European facebook friends about how America is so soft because we're addicted to AC.

I guess the heat waves that they've been having have show them that they need to shut the *expletive deleted*ck up and work on being tougher.

As I told one person the other year who was bitching about the heat... You know what we call that in my region of America?

We call that July and August. A MILD July and August.

I don't think she appreciated my candor.

BIL from Switzerland was like that until he came for a visit in the summer and got a full taste of the heat and humidity here.

Had a coworker years ago who grew up in Germany in the North, pretty close to the sea, IIRC.

She said she got a really rude shock when she moved to DC after she got married. She was in no way prepared for the heat and got a case of heat stroke her first year here because she wasn't acclimated and didn't take proper precautions.

There's a reason why many European countries considered a diplomatic posting to DC a tropical posting.

Maybe this is part of what's behind the rulers obsession with importing Africans, South Americans and people from the ME. They aren't accustomed to A/C and won't complain when it goes away.

Don't forget the hidden part of this, refrigeration. Global supply chains and food storage all rely on the same technology but at magnitudes of scale larger than your residential 5 ton A/C unit. I've worked on systems that had racks of compressors where one of the compressors had enough capacity to air condition two fairly decent size houses.

Some very large restaurants have enough A/C and refrigeration tonnage to be equivalent to a street and cul-de-sac of small homes. Particularly with the high fresh air/building air exchange requirements for public spaces. Air conditioning return air with 10-15% outside air blended in that's 95 degrees with 85% humidity requires a lot of A/C tonnage. Then all the conditioned air that is getting blown own the kitchen exhaust fans also needs to be replaced. Unless the make up air system is really well designed (rare) conditioned air gets pumped right out the roof.

Love how they always want a one size fits all water use plan. In other word if California has a water shortage and has to restrict water usage then people in Ky should be forced to use the same restrictions and shower heads, toilets etc.. We don't have a water shortage here so why I should be forced to live like someone in Caili or Nevada etc...? You live in a flipping desert I don't. Heck we're bailing out half the time.
And they love playing the guilt game, Jamal in Uganda doesn't have enough clean drinking water, insert picture of sad child, so you need to use less water. Explain to me how does me using less water in Ky gives Jamal more clean drinking water in Uganda?

Theoretically at least, that's why there are 50 Provinces in the U.S.  Different Provinces with different weather and different populations might require different laws, but I think there is the growing philosophy that we should all act under the same laws.

It's kind of a "Globalization" on a U.S. Province-by-Province basis.

I find the idea that there is  a single force trying to homogenize the world population somewhat possible, if unprovable.

Plenty of water where I live. Folks around the country who have never been around the great lakes may not have a good mental picture of just how much water they hold.

When I was a teen my cousins from Florida came up to visit. We took them to downtown Chicago to a festival held on the lakefront and checked out the beach. They were flabbergasted at the immensity of it and the size of the waves crashing ashore. My one cousin actually asked "can you ever see Michigan?"  =D They both were surprised at how oceanlike it appeared.

Flying in a float plane from Isle Royale back to the UP over a very angry Lake Superior in rough weather was a puckering adventure. Lots of water there.

The Lake Pontchartrain bridge is the same way.  You look out to the east or west sides of the bridge and you can actually see the curvature of the Earth in the distance.  Freaky.
