Recommend a Good American Whiskey
« on: April 08, 2009, 08:56:31 PM »
Branching off from this thread:  http://www.armedpolitesociety.com/index.php?topic=18940.0

Okay, we've established that Papa-san likes whiskey.  ("Juliette, does your Father like whiskey ??"  "Oui, very much.")

So here's what I'm going with.  A coffee table book of Chicago.   I need recommendations for a fine American sippin' whiskey.  (JD, Wild Turkey, etc. need not apply.)   I take a gander at Templeton Rye as suggested in the other thread, but I like lots of options.  =D

Oh, if the APS ladies could make a suggestion for what to get Mama-san, I be much obliged.  =D

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Bonjour, Scout-san.

What's your price range? You might want to throw that out there before you have APS members recommending whiskeys that are going to run you hundreds of dollar a shot. Ha ha.

My personal favorite is Woodford Reserve, a fine bourbon.  Runs about $35 a 750mL bottle, more or less.  =)

Gentleman Jim?

George dickel #12?

Maker's Mark?

Booker's?

Early Times?

I understand that Tennessee sippin' whiskey is just bourbon filtered through maple charcoal (aka, Lincoln County Process).

Wish I could help more, but my favorite sippin' whiskey (Red Breast) comes from Ireland.  =D

Would it be ironic to inform you that the best whiskey I've tasted was Yoichi 20 from Nikka? My favorite American is George Stagg from Buffalo Trace.

Course, all I've got in the cupboard is Jim Beam black label.  =|

Gotta make sure it's in a square bottle, so it don't roll out from under the front seat.  =D

I hate it when that happens.  Especially when it wedges itself behind the break pedal...

Yes, either way it's a bad thing, and it's so hard to explain to the good ociffers afterwords.  For some reason, they NEVER believe you when you try to explain that you didn't really mean to run from them... :O

IIRC Gentleman Jack was good, but I haven't had that many expensive whiskeys, so I may be blaspheming.   =|

No idea.  I'm not nearly girly enough.

It did take me a minute to figure out why you are looking to get something for a Japanese madam though.

Fine, don't accept black label JAck as a fine whisky,

BUT, you may want to look at Gentlemen Jack, and Single Barrel,  the latter runs about 50 a fifth

Hey Gew,
Guess what I'm sippin' right now. =D =D

As for whiskey...gotta be bourbon.  French roots and American know how.  Pick up a bottle of whatever costs about $50.00.  It'll be good, but the problem is...good booze is always subjective.  Ya never know what you'll like.  Just make it a good single bbl.

whatever you send-pack it well. i brought back a bottle of primo rum from the islands in my suitcase, declared it, paid the tax , and then got home to find it had busted in the suitcase. the cheap bottle of local firewater i also had made it through fine.

Black Velvet, so good they even wrote a song about it.  =D

I used to know a guy who would dump sugar directly into the bottle and drink it that way.

Knob Creek
Maker's Mark
Templeton Rye (easier to find a hens tooth outside of Iowa and Illiniois)

Seriously go with the Templeton Rye, back in the prohobition days they made this stuff in Templeton, Iowa and shipped it to Chicago for the speakeasys. There is one legal batch here in Iowa that you can buy in the store and rumors of 7 or 8 illegal operations running producing the stuff too. I've had a couple sips of the illegal stuff, good stuff better than the legal stuff and the legal stuff is pretty damn good if you like rye whiskey.

Elijah Craig, Blantons, Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, all good bourbons that have passed my way recently.

On the Jack Daniels, I despise JD. However, my old unit got a run of Jack Single Barrel ordered as a deployment commemorative. Surprisingly good.

The only American Whisky that I can even remotely stomach is Wild Turkey.

Weiser's out of Canada is some pretty fine stuff, but hard to find and expensive.

I normally drink Irish, but there are some American whiskeys I like.  George Dickel is fine, and Basil Hayden is excellent, though a bit more pricey.

Try "Old Heaven Hill" 8 year old Kentucky burbon. The price is right, and it's a very good whiskey.

I don't drink much anymore, but I do know that sometimes price has nothing to do with taste.
