Letter to my Mother
« on: November 12, 2008, 10:28:46 AM »
My Mother and I don't 'do' politics.

When ever we have tried, it always ends up heated, and occasionally personal.

So she emails me the other day and asks me "So your OK with O?".

Now i'm pretty much obligated to say something about this election to her.

I was as gentle as I could be, while still conveying a general message.

It's not that I will ever convince her, it's just that some things need to be addressed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I have great faith I Mr. O's ability to unite the people. I also think he is a very smart and honest man.

But I do not support any kind of wealth distribution or social services, and would prefer the smallest federal government possible, with a stress on self reliance and "micro" economics.

I also worry about specific gun-related policys and tax stamps. And the general undermining of the national Concealed Carry movement.

But all of that is not enough to break my hope and respect for Mr. O. I wish him the best of luck, because in my humble opinion, he's going to find his pseudo-socialist idealism to be incompatable with a free market society.

Still it's a new horizon, we can finally shake off the remenants of our percieved archaic social structure, and move forward with logical, problem solving policys, assuming those are the kinds of policys that are instated.

Love ya Mom,
----"

Great letter.  It's pretty much how I feel about the guy.

It's really odd, to disagree with someone, and still respect them.  Havn't had that since GHWB.

Nice letter.  More optimistic than how I feel, however.

On a related note, I realized I didn't hate Bill Clinton when Saddam Hussein plotted to kill him on a trip to the ME.  My reaction was one of righteous anger towards SH becasue he tried to kill MY President.  I did not want some cruise missiles lobbed in his general direction, I wanted weeks of carpet bombing and no military or government left as anything but rubble.

I still despised him as a man, as I had seen his character and governance in Arkansas way before he was ever elected to POTUS, but my anger at the threat to his person proved to myself I did not irrationally hate him.

Good letter but I find that I must comment on this one passage:

Quote
"I have great faith I Mr. O's ability to unite the people. I also think he is a very smart and honest man.

Unite the people? Hardly - his tactics during the campaign were designed to stratify and divide; Not unite. He's a democrat and their main strategy is and always has been to divide the people into haves and have nots and then pander to the have nots.

Smart? Can one be smart and deluded at the same time? Maybe but I doubt it.

Honest? He's a politician; he's a Chicago politician. 'Nuff said.

He hasn't taken office yet. Plenty of time to despise him. Right now I just dislike him.
