Off-beat October Surprise?
« on: October 18, 2012, 05:46:06 PM »
http://www.infowars.com/one-week-until-u-s-has-3-aircraft-carriers-facing-iran/

Buried in this infowars article is an interesting kernel to consider:

No one in America wants a war with Iran.  It's a loser notion to left and right.  Neither candidate makes hay with the proposition.

However:

Imagine Iran has a "natural disaster" oil spill.  Obama could be such a bridge-builder, such an elegant stateman, such a creature of self-effacement, if he stowed the egos of the "Washington power hungy elite" that want to warmonger against Iran, and put our resources to work alongside Iran's to clean up such a spill in the Gulf that threatens shipping lines to the entire world.  It would show Romney is so heartless and vicious, while Obama is merely doing his duty as Chief Executive of the United States and setting politics aside to build a better tomorrow for all the world's childrenTM.

The oil spill would put all the zOMG talk about Iranian nukes on the backburner for a good year or two.  The 2014 election cycle could focus on the international implications of the oil spill, and the 2016 cycle could get back on the zOMGIranhasnukes!eleventy!1! bandwagon again.

Watch for an October surprise that is something other than yet another war.
"But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist."

I wouldn't worry about foreign policy surprises.  No matter what it is, they will screw it up somehow.  Their arrogance is just too big of a character flaw.

An October surprise is usually something other than yet another war. I believe it is usually something that is (allegedly) embarrassing that is revealed about a particular candidate.

That is how I understand, someone's really dirty laundry is aired out just in enough time to get a flurry of press and is fresh in people's minds in the voting booth.

That will be hard to do with Romney.  If no one has been able to find any dirt on him (other than Oooooo, scary rich white guy), then it doesn't exist.  And given his past and his religion, I'm going to go with nothing.

*shrug* he might have some skeleton in his closet the media can spin. The trick might be finding the right spin.

pfft - they don't need dirt. There's a reason why Rush Limbaugh started calling them the drive-by media. They come up with something they can spin, and they spin it like crazy for a day or two. Once the facts come out, exonerating the target, they drive off and never mention the story again. The spin lives on, the facts languish in obscurity.

See, for example, the story about the homophobic Romney shaving a gay man's head.

I googled up "Mormon gay love nest", and came up with basically nothing.

yup  though it does get amusing  to get the full effect you need to follow the stories there for a week or so.  watch how the details shift back and forth.

You're talking about Obama's press corp or infowars?

This is why I can't imagine Obama getting away with creating some foreign policy fiasco and coming out looking good.  I don't think he is capable of thinking or sounding like a good leader.

However, any other October surprise I would expect to come from surrogates in the media.

speaking of Ann Romney, there were headlines and sound bites of Whoopi Goldberg trying to corner Ann Romney on Mormon military service.  Whoopi came off as if she had no idea what she was talking about.
