Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

First Krispy Kreme?

Are you kidding?

Haahahahahah. Love the picture. I heart krispy kremes. Good java too.
-
First Krispy Kreme?
Are you kidding?
LMAO. For some reason, that struck me as funny.
Chris
-
Glad you're amused there, Chris.
-
No not kidding.. Just never seen some one get so excited over a Krispy Kreme, figured it was your first one. Krispy Kremes are every where here... gas staions, supermarkets, Walamrt, etc. I think there is a outlet bakery in Des Moines. I don't really care for them much.
I miss Harold's Donuts from my hometown (Burlington, Iowa) If you knew when to get there you could get a nice warm donut right from the kitchen. We also called the place Spudnuts but I'm not really sure why we called it that, my folks called it that too.

I think Krispy Kremes are way overrated, as is Starbucks coffee.
-
Contrary to what you think, Krispy Kreams are not everywhere.
Whenever I go to Spokane, I always bring a dozen or so back for my co-workers. They think they are the freshest donuts they have ever eaten. I keep trying to tell them they are stale, afterall, they are about 8 hours old by the time they get them. Nothing like a fresh one just coming out of the glazing station to make the statement "FRESH".
We are just a little bit Krispy Kreme deficient up here in Montana, along with a serious lack of Starbucks. But the views are nice.
I think Krispy Kremes are way overrated, as is Starbucks coffee.
I imagine I would feel the same way if it was something that was available to me every day of the week. When I lived in Spokane, I had Krispy Kremes a total of 1 time and a visit to Starbucks was a rare event. So, it isn't much different now, except, if I wanted either one, I can't get it by going down the street.

I'm kind of... at a loss for words... as a means of asking you if you really think I was excited...
I channeled a humorous cultural icon as a means of expressing that there were free donuts in my office.
I likely would have done the same thing had someone provided Dunkin Donuts, or donuts from Giant or Safeway....
Why? Because it's a chance to channel a humorous cultural icon in a manner that hopefully many people will understand.
But, just for you...

Oh dear. Is that glaze or spooge? I was too 'excited' to tell...
Starbucks is overrated.
Krispy Kreme donuts, however, are not.

It's a Southern thang. I think their HQ is in N. Carolina, and they've had a presence in E. TN for decades. The 1990's were really good for the company, they went public, went nationwide, and kicked big tail, until the truth of how healthy a lowered carbohydrate lifestyle is became common knowledge. That singlehandedly put them into a tailspin, and they've been hurting ever since.
Delicious sugar fix!
I avoid 'em like the plague, any more, though.
-
All things in moderation Fig. A donut here and there won't hurt. It's the box of donuts every day that'll get you. No need to deprive yourself of good food totally, just use that un-American trait of moderation and self-control.

+1. The ones straight from the store as BobR mentioned are great. You can buy them pre-packaged at the grocery, but they're not the same.
-
When the first franchise opened up in my city, it made the television new. *sigh*
It's like these people have never seen donuts before and harped incessantly about them. However, there have to be more places downtown here that make donuts than just about anywhere.
Never was a donut man, always a blueberry muffin fan. No doubt there's a deep psychological reason for this.

Krispie Kreme = VOMIT!

I drive by the Krispie Kreme at all hours and I just realized: You need to pick up some clients there! When the "Free Donuts" light is on, there are about 20 jalopies in the parking lot, just slide a card under each windshield and you're probably guaranteed a client every week!
-
Dan, I thought meth made one skinny?

I think Krispy Kremes are way overrated
Plus 1,000. They're donuts; no more, no less, except that their cookie cutter sameness is a little off-putting. I prefer the offerings at other donut shops or gas stations.

But then they franchised in WI and we here went ape-scat for them. We had news stories about the stores opening up for a bunch of weeks. I mean, come on, it is just a donut.
I am not that impressed...being diabetic I cannot pig out on them and if I am going to go "off program" it will not be for a krispy kreme. I rather have a bagel with a ton of cream cheese on it.
-
Krispy Kreme Sundae
-Take two Krispy Kremes (warm)
-Place one scoop vanilla, raspberry, or strawberry ice cream in center of each donut
-Top liberally with butterscotch, caramel, or chocolate sauce (heck, use all three!!)
-Sprinkle with crushed Apple Jacks cereal
-Garnish with sliced banana
mmmmmmmm.....

You're right that they're just donuts, but they have a taste that I haven't found elsewhere (at least when fresh).
Chris
-
I used to sell them for Boy Scout fund raisers in PA. Here in CT we had the same huge media hype. People went crazy for them. Lines of cars down the street just to get one. Now the store is closed and gone away. I'd say it lasted 6 months.
Krispy Kremes are the spawn of Satan anyways... (They probably make them with Bisquick)
And they're TOO SWEET TOO!!
(heading for flame suit storage locker)
-
Didn't have them back home in mid-MI until a year or so ago.
Still don't have them way up here in the north.
Just haven't found another donut with that same creme filling. Nothing else strikes me as special about them.
-
"You're right that they're just donuts, but they have a taste that I haven't found elsewhere (at least when fresh)."
Exactly right.
The taste, and even texture, is completely unique.
Dunkin Donuts, Maple Glazed, etc. all have roughly similar textures and tastes for their donut batters.
Krispy Kreme's, though, are unique.
I think it must be ground up orphans or something.

You know if attorneys did that at Krispy Kreme and White Castle, we'd never have to watch some of those silly commercials they do.
-
If you're ever in Iowa, stop by a Casey's convenience store and try some of their donuts. Much better than a Krispy Kreme.
Yeah Mike after I read your excited post, I put Homer and the free donuts together, I'm a little slow on the humor today trying to prepare for a afternoon and evening's worth of meetings

Diabetic coma on a plate there, Brad.
Krispy Kreme bad? Yesterday someone brought in a six of Cinnabon. That sh- stuff's just evil.

Hey, eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow you may diet.
Krispy Kreme bad? Yesterday someone brought in a six of Cinnabon. That sh- stuff's just evil.
Agreed.
Seriously, I'll have to try Brad's recipe.
Krispy Kremes are pretty good.
-
Dan, I thought meth made one skinny?
When you have no teeth, you have to eat something!
-
I've never had a bad doughnut.
Maybe I don't eat them often enough to get a bad one.
Krispy Kreme, Jack & Jill, Shipley's, H.E.B. and any ma/pa bakery can make them tasty enough for me.
Krispy Kremes don't really seem like doughnuts. They're more like little round cakes. They're much more filling, too.
I'm probably too lazy to actually go somewhere just to buy a doughnut, so I only get them when they magically appear in the office (rare).
-
Krispy Kremes are like Coors beer. When Coors was not sold in the midwest, lo, those many years ago, one would kill for a Coors. When folks went out west their cars groaned under the weight of the cases of Coors coming back. It really, really tasted good. Now you can buy Coors anywhere and I don't. Tastes like marmot piss.
Krispy Kremes are like that. When you couldn't get 'em they tasted like heaven. Now they're everywhere and, frankly, Meijer Thrifty Acres cooks their faux Krispy Kreme lookalike and they taste the same or better, imho.
The best donuts I ever had were made by a little bakery up the street from where I grew up as kid, Delight Bakery. I peddled the morning paper at about 4 AM and Delight was dropping off their donuts (chocolate covered heaven) on the porches of the little mom and pop restaurants and grocery stores on my route about that time. I'd hook a few from the steaming warm boxes early in my route and pay off the merchant that was opening up when I was heading home after peddling my papers. MMMMMMMM.
-
Fresh from the store, Krispy Kremes are probably the best confection available here in the States.
Old, stale Krispy Kremes from the gas station or grocery store are unimpressive. They hafta come from the store, hot off the machine, to be worth eating.
-
As funny as this sounds, in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro we don't have many doughnut shops anymore. Seriously. I don't know why they all closed over the last 10-15 years. How did this happen? Krispy Kreme came into the cities five years ago and people went nuts. Doughnut shops were back! Just recently they announced some will close due to company problems. I think they had some financial/legal problems. I liked their doughnuts. They tasted just as good as the Krispy Kremes out east. They were not as good as the small town bakery doughnuts, but I think Krispy Kreme doughnuts are pretty good.
By the way, my favorite Krispy Kreme was the glazed chocolate doughnut. Now I'm kinda hungry for one...
-
So Krispy Kreme's are ordinary donuts? There's no 'krispy' and there's no 'kreme'? If that is the case I am a little disappointed.
-
While I like Krispy Kreme, I generally prefer Kolaches. Give me a sausage, jalapeno, & cheese any day over a doughnut. Second to that, would be a creamcheese kolache. Good stuff!
-
"So Krispy Kreme's are ordinary donuts? There's no 'krispy' and there's no 'kreme'? If that is the case I am a little disappointed."
Krispy Kreme is the name of a donut maker that produces a WIDE variety of donuts.
-
Kolaches? WTF is that, sounds yummy if its got jalapenos in it

grampster, that brings back some memories. Had one of those myself when I was a yute.
It was a couple of neighborhoods over from where I lived and the mom and pop donut place was on the way back. Place was called honey creme. They added/substituted honey for the sugar in the glaze. Man those were good. May have to roll through the old neighborhood in the morning.
-
I went to our local shop a few weeks ago and to my dismay, I found it was closed. I almost cried.
-
Diabetic coma on a plate there, Brad.
Krispy Kreme bad? Yesterday someone brought in a six of Cinnabon. That sh- stuff's just evil.
I always thought that that diabetic coma was caused by a Paczek or Paczki (plural, pronounced Poonch-key), on Fat Tuesday, but I grew up in the Detroit area........
Ever see a donut with the caloric equivalent of a loaded Whopper ??
PS - Stay away from the prune filled ones
-
Took the girl to the grocery store Sunday, and she had to get a dozen.
Since a went to my doctor and my low blood pressure of two years ago is now medium blood pressure, I've decided to watch my weight...
She brought home the box to share with a friend who had stayed overnight and the box stayed on the counter ALL DAY LONG...
I didn't have a one, and Monday morning found that the last two had been knocked to the floor and nibbled on by one of our cats.... Serves the kid right...
-
PS - Stay away from the prune filled ones
Good thing I wasn't eating or drinking anything when I read that!
-
I'm not kiddin' either.
Here some Paczki info: http://home.comcast.net/~osoono/ethnicdoughs/paczki/paczki.htm

Me, too. A good kolache beats a donut anyday. My grandma made excellent kolaches.
charby, it's a little square pastry with an open pocket (like a crater) smushed down in the center that is filled with a variety of tasty things and then baked. You can put sausage, jalapeno & cheese, or fruit preserves (strawberry, cherry, apricot, etc.) or poppyseeds (quite tasty) or pretty much anything else you like in them. The sweet ones usually have a combination of things like cream cheese & cherry in the hole with a light sugary glaze on top.

Sacramento is reported to be one of America's donut capitals. I believe it! Plus, there's this little Italian bakery on C and 17th...
-

....
No doubt.

Considering my pancreas quit working not long after Fat Tuesday, I'm not sure it wasn't what caused it :/
-
A good kolache...
Awfully fancy word for a dough-wrapped weenie. 'Round these here parts we call 'em pigs-in-a-blanket.
Dang northerners and their fancy-pants speakin'. Why don't they just talk English?
Brad
-
I thought a dough-wrapped weenie was a "pig-in-a-blanket" anywhere.
-
Doh! How are you doing, Jeff??

KK's are awesome, but only when hot and fresh. There is a local bakery in the town I grew up in that has much better donuts. When I was a teenager, I worked for the local paper and my shift was 4am to 12 noon on the weekends. Every sat. morning, they would have a dozen ready for me on my way back in. MMMMMmmmm, my mouth waters just thinking about them
