Supermarket inflation?
« on: June 04, 2010, 04:54:37 PM »
I went to the grocery store last night (Safeway).  I was disgusted.

6-pack of brat buns: $4
6-pack of tolerable microbrew: $8
12-pack of Coke, on "sale":  $4
Folger's instant coffee, the 8oz jar:  $10.

Seems everything has gone up in cost about 15-20% in the last 2 weeks.  Either that, or I just picked the exact wrong things to buy last night.

I says exact wrong things.

I haven't seen any significant inflation in prices recently.

Bought store brand apple sauce for $1.50 last night and a Red Baron Pizza for $2.89. (Not on sale.)
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Those better be some damn tasty buns for $4...  :O

Even premium fresh bakery the girl-bags-them-for-you buns for brats aren't that much. You must have bought some premium name-brand one.
I promise not to duck.

We grow almost all of our own food. I get sticker shock every time I buy at the store.

Those are Safeway prices.  They are normally high around here, too.  Try a different store, the prices will probably be lower.

I worke at Walmart...we're selling the 24 packs of Cokes and pepsis for $5. I'm pretty sure the Folgers is less than those prices. Don't eat brat buns, so I don't know, don't drink beer so I don't know.

Very good deal. We don't have a Meijers in this area. You've got Walmart, BiLo, Foodlion, Ingles, and maybe Publix or Costco if you travel to one of the larger cities.

I've never heard of a brat bun.  I just call them hot dog buns.  Same, same?

Same thing.  Just bigger.  Whole wheat, nice and fresh rather than the wunderbread stuff.

Shop at Aldi's, if you've got one available.  Much cheaper than Walmart.  Aldi's has a poor selection, good quality, great prices, and nonexistent customer service.  =D  aldi.us

BTW, they don't take checks or credit cards.  And the store smells funny -- Daughter calls it "Eurofunk".
"It's good, though..."

Sounds like I need to seek some of these out, as standard hot dog buns are near worthless for me (fall apart, too small, etc)

Holly crap
This is shoprite, a chain over here.
Buns 2 bucks for good store baked
No bear in the food stores here
Coke sounds a bit high.
Coffee is ludicrous, Folgers is 7 bucks for 5 Lbs,

I can get the 6 lb at bj's for 7 bucks.

I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

One pays for instant-coffee convenience.  THAT one doesn't surprise me.  Need to pick up a jar of instacoffee myself - I drink coffee made from beans I grind myself, but find that a teaspoon of instacoffee both adds a good flavor to chocolate-flavored protein powder and helps it mix up better in skim milk.

The other prices seem high to me, but I suspect that you just picked the wrong stuff.  I bought Coke product 12-packs last week at Shoppers Food Warehouse (not really a warehouse-place, for those who don't know, it's just a name - they still bag for you at the registers, and it looks like a standard supermarket to me) for ~$3.50 a pop, can get store-brand hot dog buns for $1 today  (and I think the fresh-baked hot dog/sub buns the wife and kids bought last week in Alexandria weren't $4, even), and I don't drink beer so I can't comment on that one - but I note that I picked up 8 bottles of 3 different brands of decent wine for under $50 two days ago, at Giant.

Sounds like Vons around here.  Don't know how they stay in business.  It seems like they must try to market themselves as the "elite" supermarket.  The few times I go there anymore, they're almost empty.  But, at their prices they probably only need a handful of custormers per day to cover their overhead and make some profit.
