Alternative to Olive Oil?
« on: November 15, 2012, 09:06:29 AM »
I lurvs my olive oil.  Sautee some veggies with garlic in a light coating of olive oil... yums.

However, I'm dating a woman that is allergic to olive oil.

What is a good tasty alternative that I can use?

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

A woman who's not allergic to olive oil?

Thread WINNAH!

Seriously, though, you can try grapeseed oil. I'm pretty sure I've used for stir-fry before and it worked quite well.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Nothing else will have the exact same flavor of course, but there are other tasty oils out there. Some of them will either require a grocery store that stocks some slightly more exotic stuff, a trip to Whole Foods/etc., or some online shopping. Some ideas: toasted sesame seed oil, walnut oil, macadamia nut oil, hemp seed oil. Check the smoke point on any new oils you try before you do any cooking with them.

I haven't tried the macadamia nut oil, but I've read a lot of good stuff about it and it has a very high smoke point. Most of the ones I listed have kind of a mild nutty flavor to them.

A woman who's not allergic to olive oil?

That was my first thought.

There is a joke involving the term "extra-virgin" in here somewhere.

Agreed.  Without olive oil and commensurately all Italian foods, there would be no happiness.

Grapeseed is good.  Toasted sesame oil is mighty tasty to cook with but has a lower smoke point than EVOO.  350 vs 400 IIRC.

Grapeseed oil is good.  High smoke point, mild flavor, doesn't congeal in fridge. Store in cool place so it keeps longer.

Just don't get grapeseed and rapeseed oils mixed up, could cause some awkwardness.

Depends, what are you mostly using it for?

If you don't care about the flavor, any normal vegetable oil will do for general cooking. Just make sure it isn't one of the blends, as most of them contain some olive oil in there somewhere. For salad dressing and stuff, walnut or almond oil are tasty.

And, of course, there is the king of all lipids. Lard.

I've been using Canola for most of my cooking. I find it to be pretty unobtrusive as a cooking oil.

It has a really good balance of Omega fatty acids and has a reasonably high smoke point.

Not an expert by any means, but I think you can infuse many flavors into oils.
We use mostly canola at home.

Make cheese burgers
Drain off fat
Save fat
Use fat next time you cook something
Profit

If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.
