When I was planning my funeral, I looked at donating my body, thinking it would be "free".  Nope.  It was going to cost me (or my estate) close to $4k to "donate" my body to science.

Also , anybody part harvesters, I've got a pair of kidneys I can let go for below market.  No refunds, no returns..
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,

Huh. I was thinking it would eliminate various end-costs, too.

What were those costs, I wonder.  Or where would I get that information?

I had no idea; I thought that when you donated your body, it ended up at no cost at the local medical school anatomy lab for the students to practice on.

That is one common possibility.  You could also end up in decomposing out in the woods at a FBI cadaver decomposition research center.  They use the info to help figure out how long murder victim bodies have been out there.

There are various other options.

Looking at it, you were probably looking at an out of state foundation?  Transport costs?

I've got no problem with people selling body parts for research (or organs for transplant for that matter, that law needs to be changed).  Assuming they are voluntarily given of course.

Docs need body parts, and making it illegal for people to earn money providing them will only cause shortages.

I want docs to practice on cadavers before people.  And cadavers aren't people.

So I'm left with the same question.  How does it work out that donating one's body costs one's estate money?

Are you talking about funeral expenses?  Or actual fees imposed by somebody involved in the "donation" process?

I have a big problem with it. A reasonable fee for storage and transportation I can understand. Making big bucks profits ... not acceptable. Any real profit from the sale of body parts should revert to the former person's estate, not fatten the bank account of some "tissue broker."

I have no problem with people selling their own bodies to researchers for use after the die... or selling their own organs while they live either.  I oppose current restrictions on payments to "donors" if that makes my stand clearer.

I am also not happy with donors being legally banned from getting anything from their donations.  It is fair for everyone involved to get paid if they can and desire to.

Right; it's mine, so why can't I sell it?  For necessary bits, it's the buyer that's taking a chance, anyway; I could sell them the right to harvest my kidneys and liver after my death, then become a hardcore alcoholic, ruining their investment, or I could die in a wreck or fire that ruins all the parts.

I can see limitations on family selling an adult's parts in the absence of a prior, witnessed agreement, (such as in a will or a specific instruction properly documented) though.  Just because I leave "the balance of my estate" to someone doesn't mean I want them to get anything more than my possessions.

If you could get money for your organs after death to off set other costs around death, a LOT of people would have incentive to do that.  Everyone along the market chain would have incentive.

IIRC, it was $3k and change for the actual "Donation" (I'm sure some of which was the embalming process) and a couple hundred for transport.

The best person to ask would be a funeral director.

I've toyed with the idea of donating my skeleton to the anatomy lab at the school where I work... I suspect it would cost thousands for my estate to have it prepared though....

Pre-register with your local medical teaching hospital if you want to donate your body to science. Most places, it is free.

What if I want to donate my body to mad science?  Is that still free?  Do the mad scientists have a website or phone number?
