Never been a fan, probably just more personal preference than anything, but I've always preferred the sit down variety. Could be that I'm just lazy....

Around hereits either Simplicity or higher end John Deere,  both are made locally. I'd give the edge to Simplicity as there are no 'cheap' models.

I have a 20 year old 16hp Simplicity (actual US made Briggs engine) that I swap a snow blower attachment on for clearing my 150 ft long driveway. I've used it at 10 below, always starts, traction is the onky issue I have, not power.

The standup mowers are MUCH faster, but its hard to drink a beer while using one.

Depends how much you like a challenge.

I think in my case it comes back to being lazy

I can't imagine a standup faster that a commercial zero turn. I have drifted through corners on a 35 hp bobcat with a 72 inch deck. The dixie chopper is a 27 hp smaller deck but almost too fast. Needs smooth ground to go wide open.
I cut 32 acres by myself in one day on the procat.

We have a 52" SCAG zero turn at the gun club and I can mow 2.5 acres in less than two hours with it. It flies when it mows.

You gotta be joking.

I'd like to get the mowing done before dark.

I have a riding mower for a 1/2 acre as well.  I wouldn't attempt to cut it with a push mower.  I have a first year X300 that is still going along like a champ.

My near 80YO FIL manages to cut his half acre plus with one of those.  Don't take long.

Yeah, they seem to scoot along quite smartly.  I have yet to see what happens when the "driver" falls off the sulky, though.  Presumably there's some sort of deadman switch.

Yes, just like a self propelled snow blower, you have to grip a lever to make it move forward.

Find one of these what?  The standup type discussed above?

There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

And the mower is pretty uncomplicated as well.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

I have spent time wondering at what size yard and under what circumstances various riding lawn mowing contraptions might make sense.
1. Snapper like forrest gumps
2. Lawn tractor
3. Zero turn dealie
4. Atv wuth mower attachment
5. Small utklity tractor with mower
6. Stand behind riding mower.

12-10 years ago I had a half acre yard and 21" self propelled walk behind mower, I could mow it just under 2 hours.
My next place was 1/2 acre with a lot of trees, it took me 2.5 hours to mow.

I usually mowed as soon as the dew was off on either Saturday or Sunday, if the weekend was rainy I split it up over two week nights.

Then I down graded to a city lot, takes me about 30 minutes to mow now same Lawn-Boy mower.

Sounds about right. My last property was about 3/8 acres and it took me about 1.5 hours with a self-propelled walk behind mower. My current property is a little more than twice that size...

Yep, I'm looking at a riding option for my half-acre because I have no desire to spend 2 hours of my ever-dwindling free time mowing the grass every week. If I can get that down to ~30 minutes with a riding mower I'm absolutely getting a riding mower for a half-acre.

Like I mentioned previously I plan to see just how long it takes me to do it with my walk-behind before I pull the trigger. If it doesn't take as long as I fear, then I may not go through with it. If it takes too close to a couple hours, I'll fire up the classifieds and see if can find a good used one.

Any thoughts on the Snapper-branded lawn tractors vs their riding rear-engine mower?
