Quote
Catalonia will move on Monday to declare independence from Spain after holding a banned referendum, pushing the European Union nation towards a rupture that threatens the foundations of its young democracy.

You are trying to say it wasn’t your fault? Doesn’t that break APS? What’s next Dogs and Cats living together?

Not surprised, he's a deep old file.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Do we get to re-fight the War of Jenkins Ear ??   (Oops, that was part of the War of Austrian Succession)

Can we defenestrate a couple of governors and their secretary ??  (Ooops, that was the kick-off to the Thirty Years War)

Does this mean that Spain gets back: the Spanish Netherlands, the Kingdom of Naples, the Duchy of Milan and Sardinia; the Kingdom of Sicily; and Gibraltar??

No, but we will give them the California territory to ease the sting.

Quibble: The country seceding is "Catalonia", not Spain.

This is the War of Catalan Secession. We don't call ours "The British Revolution" do we?
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Face. Palm.

It's word-play. I assume you're familiar with the historical reference.

The secession movement in Catalonia is happening in Spain, as Catalonia is currently part of Spain. So I'm comfortable calling it a "Spanish secession," in the same way that I'm comfortable with calling the war between the U.S. and the C.S.A. a "civil war."

Would someone kindly sum up what the issues are - why Catalonia is now pushing so hard for secession?

Taxes?

EU dictates?

Historic mistreatment - conquest, reconquest, annexation, occupation?

The reasons seem to be conspicuously absent from the news reports I've seen, and Wikipedia makes its history sound no more messy than much of the rest of Europe.

One reason I heard was that Catalonia supports much of the rest of Spain financially. Then there's a multitude of historical grievances, including the suppression of their native tongue, general oppression aimed against them during the Franco era which they still hold grudges about, and probably many others I did not catch while reading.

Those are what I have been reading as well.

Additionally, I think there is a general sense of discontent in the world, evidenced by Brexit and Trump's election, with the increasing "globalization" and suppression of national identities. The Catalans are part of this Zeitgeist.

I forgot all about the Maine. And the Alamo. And Jenkin's Ear. I even forgot the 5th of the November, the gunpowder treason and plot.

The Alamo was Mexico. Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821.
