Pot smokers tend to think that everyone else is a pot smoker, because that's who they hang out with.

You can replace 'pot smoker' with just about any other group of individuals.

Heres the thing with failing drug tests. 99% of the time you take a test it comes after someone has already asked you if you do drugs. If you said "why yes, i smoke pot all the time" they probably arent going to bother testing you. So, if you get a possitive test that likely means that you lied to your recruiter or another official about your drug use. More than anything else, lying like that is probably a bigger deal since its speaks more to character than the actual drug use itself. In other words, it might be more important that he lied about his use than that he did it in the first place.

I doubt it c.  I've been tested for drugs on numerous occasions, and suspicion was never part of it.  Pre-employment screening, random testing in the Army.  I think your figure might be way too high.

Your recruiter didnt ask you if you did drugs before you enlisted? You didnt sign a form indicating that you didnt?

Probably.  That was nine years ago.  I don't remember.  I was only saying that I don't think honesty is the sticking point as much as drug use, and I don't think 99% of drug tests are proceeded by questioning.  That's not the case with random testing in the Army.

A young man of my acquaintance wanted to enlist in the mlitary a couple of years ago when he finished high school, but was denied due to a drug test being positive. He indicated that it had been several months, maybe more than a year, since he had used drugs - the tests are very sensitive, and the residue from the drugs is detectable for a long time after the last usage.

The military can not trust someone that has used illegal drugs.  The lives of many people depend on each and every person performing their assigned task responsibly and to the best of their abilty.  Drug usage can cause delayed reaction symptoms to interfere with a persons performance unexpectedly and without warning.  Some drugs like LSD are more likely to have this effect than others.

I remember a few years ago when the military started random testing for drugs, there were a few cases where junior officers were kicked out of the miltary, because they had eaten hamburgher buns with poppy seeds.  The poppy seeds caused them to fail the drug tests, which could not differentiate between the food product and illegal drugs such as heroin.

Assuming "has" means "in the past", then DOD does trust individuals who have used drugs in the past (and disclosed as much during the background investigation).

In fact, it's entirely possible to get a top secret level clearance after disclosing the use of marijuana.

Hey Fig, what about the Coast Guard?  Has he looked into them?

Truth is, though, it might be the Army or nothing.

Coasties won't take him.  If he can't get a waiver from the avenues he's currently pursuing, I suspect Army's the way for him to go.

You can't live like a fool for nearly 30 years and then expect life to just fall into place for you.

If the failed test doesn't DQ him, tell him to go for nuke tech if he can't be an officer.

- This is assuming that it's correct that the failed test does DQ him from OCS - which sounds logical.

- Nuke techs are all but guaranteed to make Chief in well under ten years - unheard of in any other rating - and the highest re-enlistment bonuses - and great salaries in civilian positions if he doesn't re-enlist.

Naval Nuclear Power is the absolute worst field in the military.

I'd rather test quick-clot than go back to that environment.

Test quick-clot?
Powdered substance that clots blood. Used for extreme bleeding trama.

In the movie Platton the medic was dumping powder on bleeders, that to represent quick clot.

In 'platoon' it would have been sulfa drugs, to kill germs. Quick-clot is relatively new.

You darn well better know your math if you go Nuke. I scored in the top 3% on the ASVAB and took nuke. Problem was I was VERY weak in math. I cheated on my Algebra II final to graduate. (Don't tell) In the first 6 weeks of nuke school we went from 2+2=4 all the way through trig and calculus. And we were using SLIDE RULES!! I was one lost puppy. At the end of the 6 weeks they offered to let me out of school and knock a year off my 6 years of active. I jumped on it. Wish I could have another crack at it now though. The mistake they made was sending me to the fleet for 6 months before school. By the end of the 6 weeks all I wanted to do was go back to the fleet.

Of course there is a rumor that the only thing in the Navy smarter than a nuke is ex nukes. Cause they were smart enough to get out of the program. Tongue

No s***? Wow, I guess I'll be glad I missed it.

This is going off topic but have you ever heard of "Mucko" McDermott? He was a nuke. SUPER intelligent. He went on a workplace shooting spree in Boston (IIRC) many years ago. I recall seeing his testimony somewhere and was surprised to hear he was a nuke.
