Any big whizes at Statics and Strength of Materials?
« on: July 15, 2006, 03:05:20 PM »
Three quick questions that are bugging me.  Our prof didn't go over this very closely but surprise, it's on the test anyway.  Thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

1)  A steel rod 32' long is designed to carry a load of 5200#.  If the elongation is not to exceed .35" and the modulus of elasticity is 30x10^6, what is the diameter of the rod required?  If the allowable stress is limited to 13,600 psi, is your design satisfactory?  Check by finding stress.

2)  A steel column supports a load of 105 kips.  The allowable compressive stress in the column is 20.5 ksi.  Determine the diameter of the circular column required.

3)  A steel wire with a diameter of .325" is suspended from a ceiling with a weight of 680#.  Find the stress, strain, and elongation if the wire is 11.25' long.

I've got everything else, but this is giving me trouble.  Thanks again!

Does being a licensed civil engineer in 2 states qualify me? Cheesy

The short answers:

1a. 0.492"
1b. No. Actual stress exceeds allowable.

2. 2.55"

3a. 8197 psi
3b. 0.00027
3c. 0.037"

If you want me to show my work, I can scan my calcs.

Sent an email explaining how to approach these. They're all just applications of the relationships between force, area, stress, strain and elongation. Ask away.
