Automatic watches
« on: May 12, 2010, 02:20:01 PM »
I love a good, heavy, tough timepiece.

I have a Seiko Orange Monster that's given me some great service, and taken a lot of the abuse I throw at things attached to my wrist.  It's a great watch.  Recently though it has decided to stop periodiclly for no reason.  I'll shake it up, it'll act wound and everything, then about 20 min (of wearing)  later it'll be stopped.

This is my first automatic watch of any quality, and it's been great up till this week.  Does anyone know any tricks, or things I should check before I give up and send it in for service?

My back-up Timex feels really light on my wrist now.

I have an OM as well.  I've had mine for about 6 years and other than looking beat, it hasn't given me any trouble.  I'd send it in for repair.

BTW, I sent mine off to Motor City Watchworks for a facelift.

Unless you're very handy with a loupe and tweezers, send it back to the manufacturer for repair.

Speaking of automatic watches I once had a guy bring one to me at Wal-Mart to change the battery...

I've had a Seiko kinetic for 10-12 years that lost it's ability to maintain a long charge.  I sent it to Seiko for repair.  It worked fine for about a year or so after that, but went bad again.  As long as I shake it up and wear it, it's fine.  If I take it off for more than a couple of hours, I have to shake it up and reset the time.  While the inability to hold a charge bothers me, the watch has been remarkably durable.  Most other watches probably would have a stripped or broken stem after several thousand time adjustments.

An auto-winding watch is just like any other mechanical watch: the oil inside will start to get gummy after awhile.

Take it someplace that repairs watches (NOT a chain store), and have 'em clean and lube.

Do NOT send it to me, I ain't that good yet!

It's under warranty, I'll let Seiko fix it.

While it's been good, and I'm pretty hard on watches, it's only about 18 os old, so I'm a little surprised it needs work.  Most reviews rate these things as nigh on indestructable.

Maybe I just got a weird one.

Yep I'm in charge of supervising an average of about twelve people every day, get paid vacation, and live on my own with my fiance. So yeah I do work at WalMart. Worked at McDonalds, in a Marina, and as deckhand on a small tug and barge. Not ashamed of any of them either.

Eh, it's a big company but it's made up of people, some of which shouldn't be in charge of anything more complex than a potato peeler.

Not particularly. Playing with antique watches is one of my (many) hobbies. But I usually play with pocket watches: larger, easier to deal with.

Not willing to try messing with someone's wristwatch...

I still chuckle at it ever time I see it, and no I'm not a misogynist.

In my experience, some of the people at Wal-Mart shouldn't be in charge of a potato peeler.

Seems like a lot of hassle when $20 will get you a digital watch with a 5$ battery that lasts a year.  Taking a watch to a special store to have it oiled?

That's like saying your car is "only" 18 years old, so you don't know why anyone thinks you should change the oil.

That was a typo, it's supposed to read 18 mos. old.  Which seems a little early for PMCS.
