Argh!
« on: March 05, 2009, 09:58:59 AM »
Why do smoke alarm batteries always fail at 3AM?

This is the 3rd in the last year... yet again, 3AM.

Grrr!

Do you own your home?

What would your homeowner's insurance say to that?

I'm not sure.  I do have a CO alarm - no smoke ones though.  It's on the list.

...

Is it a sign of mental instability that I wrote up an automated email every X months to swap out the batteries?  (Along with plenty of other trivia.)

ThinkGeek FTW!

Around Christmas, they had a special where if you purchased a certain dollar value in an order, they'd throw in one of those things for free.  Sadly, I'd just RECEIVED my order from them about 2 days before they started that special  :|

My house has some interesting acoustic properties.  When one of the detectors decides it needs a new battery and beeps I can't figure out which one it is, the sound bounces all over.  When the first one goes off I replace all of the batteries but like AZ if it is in the middle of the night I just want to find the one that is angry now and get the rest the following evening or weekend.

I almost did that with the first one in this house.  Started chirping at 3AM, I get up and find out it's the one 15 feet in the air at the peak of the vaulted ceiling.

Seriously considered using the .22 revolver... but ended up going to Home Depot and buying an extension ladder just to change one #@#$%# battery.  I figured I could shoot the thing all day until the police came and never hit the speaker.

Most are wired to both AC and a 9V battery.

Ours are.  Well, except for one.  It failed and a proper replacement was muy expensive, so I replaced it with one of the battery only models.

Mine are old school.  All battery.  New Year's celebration is replacing the batteries.

What's really fun is when all the detectors are wired together and the backup batteries go completely dead.  The detector activates and takes all its buddies with it.

At 3:00 AM.

my paranoia is such that i have a co/explosive gas detector everywhere i have any fittings on the propane lines  hence the one in the crawl space under my house. when it(or its smoke detector buddy) go dead the beeping is fairly muted but i can't stand it long before i crawl in and swap em out.  the smoke detector in the attic is a pain as well
It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

I have 6 in the house.  Batteries get changed when I change the clocks.  Then they get changed out about every 10 years.

And yes, about 18 years ago, one did saved Mrs. Scout's life.  Seems she had come home work (Nurse - worked night shift), started a fire in the fireplace to take the chill out of the air and went to sleep on the couch, at some point the damper closed and filed the house with smoke. The incessant noise of the Smoke Detector woke her up and got her out of the house.

Other then repainting the family room, no other damage.  Although our clothes and the house smelled like wood smoke for about 6 months.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

I just changed the battery in a chirper a few days ago.

Why do smoke alarm batteries always fail at 3AM?

Grrr!

1.  They know you're sleeping.

2.  It's the coldest time of the day and the low battery's voltage drops just enough to trigger the (replace battery) alarm.
