Title: Uh-Oh, one of those bad "this is your neighbor..." calls

Just got a call from my next door neighbor that the neighbors that there is a First Responder unit, an ambulance, a fire truck, and four cop cars at my other next door neighbor's house.  No idea what's going on, but it can't be good...

That's typically when you stay clear of the windows, and try to have a number of walls between you and the other house.

Lubbock, and I'm hitting all the news sites to see if anything pops up.  Unfortunately our local news tends to lag a bit behind when it comes to updating their web sites.

Isn't medical emergency the most likely guess?  Oh, nevermind, there's a news crew.  Do these neighbors own dangerous terrorist sniper rifles?

Talked to the across-the-street neighbors.  Three developments, all bad...

First, the neighbors saw the first cops who pulled up.  They had guns drawn and ran to the back of the house.  Only a few seconds later they came back to their cars and donned latex gloves.

Second, when they asked the cops what was going on they were told it was "a family problem". 

Third a Medical Examiner truck showed up a little while ago.  The ME only comes on scene for a couple of reasons, none of which are good.

Why not just ask the authorities?  If you live next door you have a perfectly sound reason for wanting to know why the cavalry is massing.  They probably won't tell you the whole story, but they ought to give you a little info.

Look at it as an opportunity for a new residential listing contract.

Better get that carpet replaced, though. Hope you weren't really, really close to that neighbor.

As much as I can appreciate the dark humor, I think I'll pass on this one.  Ambulance chasing isn't my thing.  Real estate agents in general have a bad enough reputation without my trying to make it worse!

No more info at this point.  However, based on my experience around them I'm guessing that it's one of three things -

A) The father and son got into it and one or the other of them did something stupid
B) The son figured it wasn't worth it to go on and stuck a gun in his mouth
C) The daughter's soon-to-be-ex-husband came around to start something and got into it with the father

I hope it wasn't any of them, but I fear that it's going to be.  The least tragic outcome (if you could even call it that) would be the option C with the father acting in self-defense.

Maybe you can buy it dirt cheap because of what happened and have a rental next door.

I think it went something like this. 

The family's mild-mannered Uncle Bernie was influenced by America's sick gun culture and the Bush Administration's Campaign of Fear and Hate Against Peace-Loving Muslims.  Thus, he stopped in at a gun show, where he got in line with Islamic terrorists and other criminals to purchase a fully-automatic AK-47 with super-high-magnification scope and cop-killer, airplane-downer bullets. 

Upon arriving at the house in question, he loaded the rifle, attached the scope (which magically achieved zero, just like they do in the movies), and let his hatred and rage flow through him as he cradled it in his sweaty hands.  He lusted to shoot someone, anyone.  Hopefully a rag-head or Negro, but he really didn't care, the gun was commanding him to shoot.  Shoot!  Louder and louder, the commands rang in his skull. 

Soon, someone came home.  An instant later, both were dead - murdered by the terrorist AK-47 that should never have been in civilian hands.  My fellow Americans, this is happening all around us in this country and it is time we put an end to it!   police

I don't have total confirmation on all the details, but from what I can piece together the father got into it big time with the son.  I don't know what was said or what it was about, but the end result was the son stepped out in the back yard and put a bullet in his head.

That's just sad. We had a similar thing happen here a few years ago. What makes some people think a bullet is the answer to everything?

From what I have experienced and what I gather, the son was pretty unstable to begin with.  BTW, just for the record the son was not a kid - probably late 30's/early 40's.  He had been embroiled in a bitter ongoing multi-year divorce and the Dad was footing all the legal bills, which I understand were significant (almost $30K if my info is correct).  The son had stayed there all last year, sponging off his parents, until his Dad pretty much threw him out and told him to get a life, get a job, and stop being a bum.  I didn't know until last night that the cops had been been called several times before when things got heated.  I can't imagine what pushed the guy over the line yesterday.

Scuttlebutt around the neighborhood is that he actually did it right in front of his parents.  Given the probable location of the body in the yard, I have doubts about that unless the parents happened to be standing in a very odd place.  I have no way of verifying this without walking up and asking, so all this will have to remain conjecture based on what I've deduced after taking all the gossip and running it through the reality filters.
