I mentioned this in another topic: The Hong Kong protestors are prominently waving American flags and are singing the Star Spangled Banner.
I was thinking about how this must infuriate the likes of the dem presidential nominees, the squad, Colin Pumpernickel, etc. As much hate as the flag gets here lately, it's nice to see that when people are truly oppressed (vs SJW oppressed), they still turn to the flag - and the United States - as the symbol of freedom. Yet here in the US, the left considers it a symbol of oppression. Topsy turvy world.

"...it's nice to see that when people are truly oppressed (vs SJW oppressed)..."
I like that comparison. It emphasizes the propaganda BS that the SJWs vomit.
But it's a racist remark emphasizing your white privilege.
Shame on you.
(Edited to correct apostrophe.)

Meh, just getting out of bed in the morning emphasizes my white privilege.
I have to again note: Two protests going on this weekend on opposite sides of the world: In Hong Kong, Chinese proudly wave the American flag. In Portland, people are violently attacked for displaying the American flag.

I listened to a podcast last week (https://crosspolitic.com/podcast/cp-steve-yates-on-hong-kong-democratic-socialist-convention-and-govt-matt-bevin-nails-it/) sometime, interview with Steve Yates (https://www.steve-yates.com/). (Senior policy advisor to blah blah blah). He thinks the situation indicates the Chinese Commie Party is in bad shape right now, that all is not well in the world's biggest police state.
Would be interesting. I note we're 70 years out from the 1949 revolution, the same time it took for Russian Soviet commiunism to begin to crumble.
-
With Trump messing with tariffs for Chinese goods (I imagine there are other things also), I have heard the Chinese economy isn't doing as well recently. That wouldn't help stability.

I hope so.
I doubt it.
China has enough free market in their economy to not go bankrupt like the USSR.
I am afraid I am not at all seeing how this will end up for the residents of HK. What is to stop the Chinese from sending in tanks? It's not like the residents of Hong Kong have guns. =|

And the strongest advocates of socialism and communism today are probably professors in American universities.

That's what is bringing this on. Hong Kong is getting uppity and forgetting that it owes it's largess to the party. PRC is concerned that might become a trend. I suspect we're working up to Tienanmen 2. PRC can't allow HK to succeed in any way in this, or the Shenzhen special economic zone will start pondering.

A little thread necro.
A continuation of Hong Kong citizens embracing traditional US values, while a US citizen argues about it with them. In the video, the US citizen argues that the Chinese protestors believe freedom is more important than safety, when they should be embracing safety as more important than freedom.
While it brings me joy to watch the Chinese pendulum swing towards freedom, it saddens me to see so many in the US wanting to swing ours away from it.

That woman... Words fail me.
-
Wow, she doesn't have any clue of what the price would be for the safety she wants. She also doesn't understand that it is just an illusion.
-
I thought I'd necro this thread rather than start another.
The HK protests continue to escalate. Apparently, on Tuesday molotovs and tear gas were exchanged. I haven't been following this much at all. I wonder if anyone has any insights regarding the possibility of HK actually resisting China's control. It seems unlikely to me that any significant changes will occur.
I also ran across this drone footage. It strikes me that the protesters are playing for keeps. http://shanghaiist.com/2019/11/16/drone-footage-of-how-hong-kong-students-are-turning-their-universities-into-fortresses (http://shanghaiist.com/2019/11/16/drone-footage-of-how-hong-kong-students-are-turning-their-universities-into-fortresses)
At around the 2:37 mark you can see a Gadsen flag, I thought that was interesting: https://youtu.be/vyp2WYahCrA?t=157

Yeah, I was looking at bringing this back up myself.
I'm not sure where I am regarding the protestors at this point. I was very much for them initially, as my OP points out. I can only go by what I see in the news, but I'm concerned that while the protestors are still using America as their base message for freedom, some of them seem to be going antifa rather than Tea party. I hope my opinion is wrong, or the footage I have seen is biased.

Anyone who is not a communist needs to get out of Hong Kong entirely, before it is eaten by the communists.
This is horrible.

If by "going antifa" you mean socialist, I don't really think so. If by "going antifa" you mean masks and beating folks with improvised weapons, they are literally fighting a Communist Oppressor, and doing so in an already pacified region replete with informers. I won't nitpick their tactics. If I was in their position, I'd be IDing Communist cops and soldiers and burning their homes down with their families inside. That's what a civil war against a brutal police state looks like.
-

I'm willing to give them a ton of leeway in that regard.
-
Can't we just send a a 100 container ships filled with our communist sympathizers to HK and bring back the HK citizens who are craving freedom?
It seems like everyone would win.
We cannot logistically save them all, but I'd be all for trading a few million people both ways.
-
If they were Muslim terrorists who would turn against us immediately we couldn’t send aid fast enough
But people who want freedom? We are going to hang them out to dry
-
They are literally rounding up students and putting them on trains...
I think we’ve seen this movie Before...

They're fighting communists. How dare they?!? Don't you know commies are cool?
I think we're up to 60% or perhaps more, Millennials and younger that would prefer communism to our current system. I'm up for a 1 to 1 trade - them for the kids in Hong Kong.
-
Some of these protesters are using bows and arrows.
Wonder why they would use such primitive weapons?/s
-
News reports this morning say Hongkong police are shutting down rapid transit in the area around the school in preparation for an assault to end the protests.
My prediction is a bunch of dead protestors.

A statement from the president today:
“We have to stand with Hong Kong, but I’m also standing with President Xi [Jinping], he’s a friend of mine. He’s an incredible guy, but we have to stand … I’d like to see them work it out, okay?” the president said. “I stand with freedom, I stand with all of the things that I want to do, but we are also in the process of making one of the largest trade deals in history. And if we could do that, it would be great.”
I guess he's trying to walk a fine line.
-

Yeah. The line between being seen as caring about individual liberty or being seen as just another plutocrat.
-
So .... stand up for liberty and potentially TKO a new trade agreement (while everyone is complaining the tariffs and the trade war are killing the economy) or try to get a new trade deal done first, then deal with Hong Kong?
Does "standing up for liberty" really do anything constructive to persuade a country that's okay with driving military tanks over students?
What's the "battle plan?" ??? =|
-
Yeah. The line between being seen as caring about individual liberty or being seen as just another plutocrat.
He can "be seen as caring about individual liberty" all he wants, as long as it doesn't get us into a shooting war with the chicoms.
Sucks to be Hong Kong, but that tar baby isn't our problem.

Crazy spitballing thought, but if I were in charge of Hong Kong, I'd go nuke shopping. Get your hands on one, as long as it's not obviously sourced from the US, and play Sheriff Bart to China's angry mob..

What in the world can we do about Hong Kong?
China has nuclear weapons that they can drop anywhere in the USA.
Hong Kong is apparently part of China.
Are we going to start a war with China to save them from their own evil government?

Dude, STFU! Don't give the government ideas.
