Police say the suspect shot and killed himself on Swamp Rabbit Trail. They think the suspect called his mom right before they shot himself.

Cop that died was a childhood friend of mine. Very sad day. 20 years since our last officer killed in the line of duty.
-
My condolences.

Jocasse,
I'm truly sorry. Every time I see a story of "Police Officer Killed" I wonder if it'll be one of my soldiers, and I dread to read the name.
Please pass along my sympathies to his family. I understand he has kids and his widow is pregnant. If there is a fund of some type to contribute to, please post that info here. I'd like to help.
-
My sympathy to you and to his family.
-
And the POS that shot him was a known gang member who was sentenced to a suspended ten year sentence in 2015 for strong armed robbery. Way to go justice, way to freakin go.
Sent from my iPhone. Freaking autocorrect.

But get caught with a little weed and it's off to jail with you!

I had the same feeling when I read a Greenville officer was shot. I have a couple from friends in the department, and I knew if it wasn't one of them it would be someone they knew. It's a very interconnected town.
I hadn't seen Allen in many years, but his parents knew mine and his dad was the principal of our small Christian school. Allen's mom taught my wife in the Education dept at BJU.
One of the saddest things about this story is that his older brother, who I went to college with, died a couple years ago, so their parents are left without any children.

Wish I had known Allen better. Last I knew he was in the Army. I didn't even know he was back working in town.
-
All my sympathy to the family. I hate reading stuff like that.

To my dismay, there was a lot of misplaced sympathy for the family of the shooter and his community, even for the shooter. This story puts the lie to all of it. The f*cker was dumb as a box of f*cking rocks, he was a violent, misanthropic, sociopathic *expletive deleted*hole, and he deserved to die. Assuming he was responsible for the other murder mentioned here, it was only a matter of time until he killed again.
There are a lot of squishy Christians and liberals in town, especially in 29601. Fortunately it seems our LEO's do pretty good work, one memorable episode notwithstanding.

Update:

“Allen was always pushing, challenging, and critiquing himself to become better. He wanted to be the best, and he was the best. It didn't matter what the situation was, he wanted to be the first one there by your side to protect you. I think I can say that there isn't an Officer who knew or worked closely with Allen that wouldn't want Allen by their side in the line of duty. Allen was ALWAYS there. He wanted to defeat the evil and protect the good.
This still sucks.

Sheesh.
“We were riding around just basically catching up talking and we started conversating about jobs,” Merritt said.
People who don't know 25-cent words apparently now make up 50-cent words to compensate.

Ugh. Never mind.

That is some made up crap right there, anyone who would make up a word like conversating would also start the sentence like this: We was juzz riding around.
