The odor combination/conflagration of patchouli+MREshitz is something I contemplate with horror.

Yeah, I don't think anyone who uses patchouli would be caught dead anywhere near an MRE.

One of the few advantages MP's had over other units were we were on Separate Rats since we work 24 hour shifts and our soldiers weren't always able to make it to the mess hall for meals.  and when we were out in the field, we're constantly out on patrols the various MSR's we could always find an Imbiß.  Most MRE's were either thrown away or returned to garrison un-eaten.

The old crackers were great, especially with cheese.  That off tasting wheat bread in them now is terrible.

I haven't had one since the mid 90's, so I wouldn't know.

In all fairness, me and Pary were pretty rough to handle. You never met two wilder girl children and poor Hussan got the bulk of parental oversight since my parents smartly dictated that Pary could only stay over during summer, when they could stick us outside, in a tent.

Then again, my parents were the ones who ended up doing the camping trips...

My first drill in the reserves in the fall of 1983, I was issued a C-Rat from either 1951 or 1953, I disremember the exact date, but it was from the Korean War and more than 30 years old.   It was slightly off-putting, and my fellow soldiers had me open the tins in mine first, kind of a right of passage, as I had been issued MRE's in Basic and hadn't had a C-Rat before.  The original MRE's weren't all that hot either.


Is it wrong that I hope they get some dented cans, and that botulism wipes them out ?

I have a couple of cases laying around, I've been trying to eat through them because some were pushing 5 years old.
They all have been edible but I hate that cheese spread. I really don't like anything with a fake cheese flavor so thats just me.
I usually take them to work and eat them for lunch. One of the guys I work with has the same overstock problem, so we do it as an mre lunch day and compare notes.

I like most MREs. Just don't put an omelet in a bag. I miss the old ones some, get into those as a kid since BiL was 1st Armored.  I liked the old crackers, the freeze dried fruit,and believe it or not, the freeze dried pork patty.  Still looking for more Italian field rations. The one I had was pretty great.
