Anybody else hear about this? It happened back on May the 6th but it seems to be making the rounds recently. https://www.ammoland.com/2017/09/defensive-use-of-ar-15-man-kills-two-wounds-one-of-three-attackers/#axzz4tnGG8rdY
Three people in a car at 2:15 in the morning attempt a drive-by. He returns fire with his rifle hitting all 3, killing two. Brings up the question, why? This looks like it might be a nice area and not some gang on gang shooting, mentions the night before someone tried to set his house on fire which might explain why he had his rifle on him at the time and was up at 2:15.

Lots of parts seem to be missing in that story. Like why would one be out roaming their front yard (not that you can't), with an AR-15 at 2:15am ?? I guess he was expecting trouble. Be interesting to know why...

All of us real operators do that. [strokes bushy operator beard]

It's true that you may not be paranoid if they really are out to get you, but then there's that pesky question of why they are out to get you.

Because it was tacticool outside.

I've been out at that time with my gun in one hand and combat commander in the other.

Personally, I don't want to see it.

There seems to be a mish-mosh of reports on this incident. Here's an early one which does not mention a rifle at all.

Apparently, the thrust of the ammoland article is to emphasize the need for the most effective defense weaponry, suggesting that full auto and "high" capacity magazines add to this effectiveness.
As such, author Dean Weingarten did not go into details on the background. I found a couple of other links by searching on the address involved. Apparently, it is or was an <ahem> "active" area, since another story reports on a storekeeper on that street defending his property with a firearm.
So while there's a legitimate question as to why the AR owner was out there fully armed at 2:15 AM, that was apart from what Weingarten was trying to convey in the OP's link.
In other words, some Who, What, Why, When, and Where answers were omitted by Weingarten in order to make another point. However, I personally am not willing to dig out these additional WWWWW details beyond just search-engining the address.

Okay that isn't the greatest area. Drive by's around there or other crimes are definitely going to happen with much more frequency than say Sugar Land or The Woodlands. Not as bad as the Wards, but not great either.

I think you are right. Not the best area. And when it really comes down to it, he can walk around his own property with a loaded rifle if he wants to.
I was thinking about that Castillo guy that was shot by the officer up North. He was out with his family at 3 AM and no one seemed to bat an eye about that.

It seems he was very prepared for the incident. Unusually so. Seems sketchy to me.

If you're thinking of Philando Castile, you've got the time wrong. Someone else?

Here's a likely scenario:
Guy has a credible threat.
Guy contacts police about threat and they tell him that since nothing has happened yet there is nothing they can do.
Guy takes appropriate precautions.
No idea if that is anything like what happened but if you are going to depend on the government for your personal safety you are likely to be disappointed at the very least.

After Irma, before the power came back up, I had two (2!!!) AR's loaded and ready to go. I even did some yard work (at dusk, so it was cool) with one. If looters had shown up would I be too prepared and sketchy?
If someone tried to set my house on fire, and the police weren't taking it seriously I might very well consider it reasonable to set an armed watch. Mine might even have a nightscope. Sketchy? A well planned arson can block entrances to keep you stuck inside, or funnel you into an ambush. That's a pretty damn serious threat.

Yeah, it's sketchy to be in that situation in the first place.
I don't know many upstanding citizens who find themselves on their porch at 2:30am with an AR waiting for a drive-by or arson attempt that they know is coming. Now maybe he's just a do-gooder who accidentally crossed some bad hombres in the past, they came after him later and he did what had to do but the likelihood of that vs drug/gang/criminal/turf war seems pretty small to me.

Sometimes something innocuous pisses off someone who is a tad crazy.

I'm not casting aspersions on the homeowner. Nor am I saying he did anything wrong. In fact, it would appear that he did everything right.
I'm simply curious as to what would expect to anticipate a drive-by upon his home/person in the middle of the night. I can clearly see (and totally agree with dogmush on the being prepared to repel boarders/looters after an apocalyptic event such as a hurricane), the need to defend home and hearth. I have firearms available to me 24/7/365 to do the same. I have yet, however, ever suss'ed out a need to patrol the perimeter of my home at O'darkthirty with any firearm because I expected to be overrun...

Phone man I know in Tulsa was witness to a gang related murder while on the job a number of years ago.
Numerous threats from said gang. Police offered no help. Gang did a drive-by shooting, wrong house the first time, Street instead of Avenue..
2nd time they had the right address.
I might have taken some precautions.
Company wouldn't even move him to a different area to work. He ended up with a stress related medical early retirement.

Without outlining the exact circumstances, I remember my older brother telling me once, "Sometimes it's a good idea to say you were tying your shoe and didn't see a thing."
