This just shows the dangers of banning plastic straws. They can be deadly.
Elena Struthers-Gardner, 60, was carrying a mason-jar style drinking glass with a screw-top lid in her kitchen in Poole, Dorset, when she collapsed. The 25 centimetre stainless steel straw entered her left eye socket and pierced her brain. Today a coroner said metal drinking straws should never be used with a lid that fixes them in place, and "great care should be taken" while using them.

Got your steel straw permit, guvenuh?

I'm surprised the UK even allows metal straws, they are basically just expedient stabby things anyway.

Sad story. And, I chuckled at all of your jokes about English law, permits, etc.
Read an article where the coroner complained that it is far to easy to purchase one of these straws, and that they are readily available at many stores. Then a member of the House of Commons said there needs to be an investigation into these straws and what action needs to be taken about this.
And I stopped laughing.

I'm sure they use plenty of straw man arguments

Friends don't let friends drink and walk.

Are you joking? Please?

This was in the article, but I think it was a family member. That did seem to be the tone of the article.
Reading a statement to the inquest, Robin Struthers, Mrs Struthers-Gardner's brother, called for the coroner to comment on how easy it is to purchase metal straws, adding: "These straws can very easily be lethal."

I used to smoke a pipe and it only took one instance of walking into a closed glass door to learn not to put long hard things in your mouth.

Seriously, guys, are we not doing "phrasing" anymore?
