Never heard of this before...

In all of the years I've studied American military history I never knew that the War Department had done a systematic survey of over 500,000 GIs to get their opinions of a wide range of things having to do with military life.

I've heard of smaller surveys, usually a couple of units per Division. Don't know if that was a command/theater kind of thing, or if it was part and parcel to this larger effort.

This seems to have been done only with the Army... I'm wondering if similar efforts were undertaken for the Navy...
