Is tincture of iodine used in that process?  I think I recall that the FDA banned it a couple of years ago for that reason.

Never have heard of that. Looks like  you can buy tincture of iodine all day long online

I thing the govt should just give that out to anyone willing to take it.

Big thing here in NJ is there allowing all the cops to carry narcan to combat the od's.
I had a conversation with someone I know that works in rehab (essentially). What there not going is holding someone for at least 48 hours after dosing with the narcan. People are getting cut loose, go out get more drugs, take said drugs, don't feel the effect (because of the narcan), go get and take more drugs, OD good and proper the second time.

I was given the same reason for USP boric acid no longer being available.
 Thirty plus years ago my daughter(a year or so at the time) was having a serious bout with diaper rash. Expensive Rx didn't work. I remembered my Mom using boric acid for a number of things in my youth so started looking and found "Borofax 10% " worked great! Used it though all my kids diaper years.
When my granddaughter started having a similar issue I found Borofax and all of the generic boric acid containing creams had been discontinued. 
Didn't make sense it was drug related as BA is still available as an anti- roach treatment and I've heard meth cookers aren't purity conscience.
