Rain-mageddon
« on: April 29, 2017, 01:13:24 PM »
Ugh. Heavy rain predicted for the next two days. I have myself to blame. Every time I plan a trip to some far-off river town (in this case, Hermann, MO), cataclysmic rains follow.

We are about to wash away on this side I figure the gauge has probably overflowed

Ayup.

Map should be current as to when the page loads.

A little snow here, but I've got to go to Louisville tomorrow and snow's always a pain.  :old:

(Around here, the "s" is pronounced in Louisville.  You say "Loo-ey-ville" and people know you're a foreigner.)

Looking at another 3"-4"+ with the remainder of this system on top of the 6" or so we already got the last couple of days.
I'm thinking our drought is at the very least paused.

We're about as wet as we want to be right now. The creek in front of the house has only been out of its banks once or twice in the past 21 years but by tomorrow morning could be again. If that happens we are cut off from all civilization until it goes back down. The other road out is a mud road. (The house is another 10-12 feet above flood stage.)
I've got a welding project that I really wanted to finish this weekend but there is entirely too much lightning.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

You say that like it would be a bad thing...

Flooding is one thing I don't have to worry about at my house. If I flood most of Northeast Oklahoma would be under water, not that such would necessarily be a completely bad thing.

From October 2016 to April 2017, the Seattle area received about 45 inches of rain, the most recorded since records have been kept.

be glad you are getting some rain.  Here in North Florida, we are down 15 inches over the past 5 months.  Place is as dry as a desert, wild fires burning everywhere.

It's winding down. For now, anyway. We're supposed to get a little more this week, but the big one seems to have passed.

Over 4 inches here in the last 48 Hours.   Sump pumps are doing their thing.  A little seepage around one of the cracks in the back wall, draining right into one of the floor drains to one of the sumps.

Of course, looking out my front door shows that fish are biting on Lake Main Street.  Not sure how the house across the street (at the lowest point) is fairing, but I'll find out in the next few days by how much stuff hits the trash...
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Fishmageddon

A dark and stormy night a couple of years ago, I went out to check the rain gauge I clamped to the balcony rail and found a fish in it.  No kidding.  This is not photoshopped or rigged, or anything.  This is just the way I found it.  I was shocked when I saw that little eyeball staring back at me.  Pic re-sized for the attachment limit and cropped are the only manipulations.

No other fish in the yard the next day, although it's possible there were some in the rain gutter, or the magpies got them off the ground before I got out to look in the daylight.

I'm having trouble with multiple attachments...

Here it is as I found it in the rain gauge clamped to the balcony.  Once again, no lie, just happenstance as it happened.

Me when people talk about Seattle being rainy:

http://www.usclimatedata.com/climate/mountain-rest/south-carolina/united-states/ussc0620

Quote
Average annual precipitation - rainfall:   61.97 inch

Seattle:
Quote
Average annual precipitation - rainfall:   37.13 inch

Now what I don't have is average days with precipitation for SC...Seattle is 147.

Drove down and back 169 from KC to Tulsa yesterday and most of the creeks/rivers were out of their banks.  Those that weren't had very steep banks, which were only a couple.  Thankfully none of them were out of them far enough to effect 169 from being traveled.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

If it doesn't dry out, expect a spike in corn prices as acres switch to soybeans.

We got a bit of rain last Saturday, what with the nearby tornadoes and all.

The bottom of the culvert pipe under our drive is about 4' below the surface of the driveway.  The runoff was about 3" deep on the entire road and over the driveway entrance - it was just one big sheet of rushing water.  And one of the driveway edge markers had washed away.

Sure glad I guessed right.
